What is an E61 espresso machine?
The E61 is a traditional group design that circulates hot water from the boiler through the group to maintain temperature. Its heavy brass mass helps stabilize brewing once fully warmed. Raising the lever begins the brew cycle and supports mechanical pre-infusion on many models. Because the group has been used for decades, compatible 58mm accessories and service knowledge are widely available.
Traditional E61 machines reward a deliberate routine. They are generally larger and require more warm-up time than compact thermoblock designs. New actively heated versions can reduce that wait, while smart plugs are often used with conventional models. Always follow the manufacturer’s electrical and safety guidance.
Single boiler, heat exchanger or dual boiler?
- Single boiler: ideal when straight espresso is the priority and milk drinks are occasional.
- Heat exchanger: brews and steams together from one main boiler, making it effective for milk drinks.
- Dual boiler: independently manages brew and steam functions for maximum temperature and workflow control.

Important E61 buying decisions
Look beyond appearance. Decide whether you need a reservoir or direct plumbing, a vibration or rotary pump, adjustable PID temperature control, and flow control. Measure height under cabinets and allow room to fill the reservoir. Pair the machine with a capable espresso grinder and scale.
How long does an E61 machine take to warm up?
Traditional versions often need substantially longer than compact machines because the group must become evenly heat-soaked. Actively heated E61 groups may be ready sooner. Use the warm-up specification on each product page.
Does every E61 machine have PID control?
No. The group and temperature controller are separate features. This collection includes both PID and non-PID machines.
Can every E61 machine be plumbed in?
No. Water-source capability depends on the complete machine. Some use reservoirs only, while others can switch between a tank and a prepared water line.
Why do buyers choose E61?
Common reasons include the tactile lever workflow, temperature stability after warm-up, traditional styling, 58mm compatibility and long-established serviceability.
