Timed Dosing Coffee & Espresso Grinders

Precision grinders for your daily coffee ritual.

Choosing your equipment

Timed-dosing espresso grinders dispense for a programmed number of seconds, creating a fast workflow for repeated drinks. This collection includes compact home grinders, larger prosumer models and commercial on-demand grinders from Eureka, Ceado, Fiorenzato, Mazzer, Compak and Turin.

Timer accuracy depends on a stable grind setting, hopper level, bean condition and clean grounds path. Compare these models with grind-by-weight grinders, single-dose grinders and the full commercial grinder collection.

How to Choose a Timed-Dosing Espresso Grinder

A timer improves speed and repeatability, but it meters time rather than mass. The grinder, coffee and operating routine determine how consistent the resulting dose will be.

How timed dosing works

After programming a single or double dose time, the grinder runs for that interval when activated. Some models provide multiple recipes, continuous grinding or manual overrides. This is convenient when the same coffee and recipe are used repeatedly.

Timed dosing does not weigh the output. Grind size, bean density, hopper pressure and burr condition can change grams per second. Verify dose weight with a scale during setup and periodically throughout service.

Timed dosing versus grind by weight

Grind-by-weight grinders use an integrated scale or weighing system to target output mass. They can reduce adjustment when grind size changes, but require correct portafilter positioning and clean scale components. Timed grinders are mechanically simpler and often offer more model choices.

For a home bar making a few drinks, either can be effective. For high-volume service, calculate whether weight-based dosing saves enough correction to justify added complexity. Workflow, service support and staff training matter as much as headline accuracy.

Hopper management and freshness

Keep only the quantity of beans needed for the service period when freshness is important. Hopper lids reduce exposure but are not equivalent to sealed coffee storage. Oils and fragments can accumulate inside the hopper and should be cleaned according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Dose output can shift as the hopper empties because bean weight above the feed changes. Establish a practical minimum fill level and recalibrate the timer after changing coffee, roast level or grind setting.

Burr size and grinding speed

This collection spans compact 50–55mm models, 64mm grinders and 83mm platforms. Larger burrs may grind faster, but tooth geometry, motor and feed design determine actual throughput. Do not use diameter as a substitute for published performance and duty cycle.

For home use, speed may be less important than sound, footprint and adjustment feel. For a café, seconds saved per dose, heat management and recovery during rushes can affect service. Compare the manufacturer’s intended workload.

Activation and portafilter workflow

Grinders may start with a display button, portafilter switch or fork-mounted control. Check whether the fork fits your portafilter, whether it adjusts for height, and whether grounds land centrally. Hands-free grinding can improve puck preparation flow when alignment is correct.

A dosing cup may still be useful for some baskets or brew methods. If the grinder is shared by several staff members, choose controls that are easy to understand and difficult to change accidentally.

Home versus commercial duty

Compact models such as the Eureka Mignon Specialita and Silenzio are aimed at home workflows. Larger Ceado, Fiorenzato, Mazzer and Compak grinders add capacity, cooling and service-oriented construction. Some overlap exists, but the manufacturer’s duty rating should guide placement.

A commercial grinder should be evaluated for ventilation, hopper size, electrical requirements, cleaning access, replacement parts and staff usability. A home grinder should not be selected for sustained café demand merely because it has a timer.

Dialing in a timer

First dial grind size for taste and shot time using a scale. Then program dose time to reach the desired mass. After changing grind size, recheck output because grams per second often changes. Adjust one variable at a time.

Track average output over several doses rather than reacting to one variation. Coffee age, static and hopper level can create normal movement. If variation suddenly increases, inspect the chute, declumper, burr chamber and bean supply before changing every setting.

Model families in this collection

The Eureka Mignon Specialita and Silenzio suit compact home bars. Eureka Atom, Ceado E37, Fiorenzato F64/F83, Mazzer Super Jolly V Up and Compak on-demand models serve larger or more commercial workflows. Turin ZF83 offers an 83mm commercial-style option.

Compare included burr coating, fan or cooling system, display, dose controls, hopper capacity and voltage on each product page. Similar-looking models can differ in intended use and included equipment.

Cleaning and calibration

Unplug before removing the hopper or accessing burrs. Brush coffee from the chute and chamber, keep water away from burrs and electronics, and ensure the fork and activation switch remain clean. Oils in a dirty hopper can affect taste and feed consistency.

After cleaning, confirm the adjustment and timer with test doses. If the upper burr carrier was removed, follow the manual for reassembly and calibration. Never run burrs in contact.

Timed-dosing grinder FAQs

Frequently Asked Questions About Timed-Dosing Grinders

Are timed espresso grinders accurate?

They can be very repeatable under stable conditions, but they dispense by time rather than directly measuring output weight.

Why did my timed dose weight change?

Grind size, hopper level, coffee density, age, static or grounds-path buildup can change grams dispensed per second.

Do I still need a scale?

Yes. Use a scale to program and periodically verify timed doses and espresso recipes.

Is timed dosing faster than single dosing?

For repeated drinks from one hopper, it usually removes the separate bean-weighing step and can be faster.

Is grind by weight better?

It may reduce weight correction, but costs more and adds scale-positioning and maintenance considerations. Choose by workflow.

What burr size is best for a café?

There is no universal size. Match throughput, cooling, motor and duty rating to expected volume.

Can a timed grinder be used at home?

Yes. Compact models are designed specifically for home bars and repeated espresso drinks.

How often should I recalibrate the timer?

Recheck after changing coffee or grind size, after cleaning, and whenever output weight drifts.

Should I keep the hopper full?

Maintain a consistent practical level during service, but avoid storing more coffee in the hopper than needed.

Can timed grinders make filter coffee?

Some can, but many are optimized for espresso and direct-to-portafilter use. Confirm range and burr suitability.
