Compak Bolt 83: choose freshly ground or prepared-dose service
The Compak Bolt 83 is an espresso grinder for a bar that wants control over when a dose is prepared. Its 83mm flat burrs work with two distinct modes: Fresh grinds on demand, while Predose prepares coffee ahead of the next serving action.
That distinction matters more than an “instant” claim. Predose can shorten the wait at the point of delivery because grinding has already happened; Fresh keeps grinding tied to the order. Choose the mode around your queue, coffee turnover and freshness standard.
Fresh mode for grinding to order
Fresh mode offers one, two or three timed dose selections. Staff can keep different basket or recipe timers available, then verify the delivered weight with a scale. The 2.8-inch TFT touchscreen also provides dose counters and a burr-change reminder.
Predose mode for a planned rush
Predose prepares one or two doses in advance. It can help a steady queue move, but prepared grounds wait before brewing. Review turnover and avoid treating prepared-dose service as the same process as grinding each order on demand. A motor fan and adjustable portafilter support complement the bar workflow.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between Fresh and Predose?
Fresh grinds when a dose is requested. Predose grinds ahead and holds one or two prepared doses for delivery. Fast delivery in Predose mode is not the same as grinding the coffee instantaneously.
Does the Bolt grind by weight?
No. The dose programs are time based. Check dose weight on a scale when setting up a recipe and after changes to coffee or grind size.
Does Predose affect freshness?
Prepared grounds spend time waiting before extraction. In a steady queue that interval may be short; during slower periods, Fresh mode keeps grinding closer to the order. Set a workflow that matches your service pace.
Are Lock & Load and Red Speed burrs standard?
Compak lists Lock & Load access and Red Speed burrs as optional on the Bolt platform. Confirm the fitted configuration before ordering; an option shown in manufacturer imagery is not automatically included.
How is it different from the E8?
Both use 83mm flat burrs. The Bolt’s distinguishing workflow is its Fresh/Predose choice. The E8 OD LLS centers on on-demand dosing and includes the Lock & Load system identified in its model name.
Does a portafilter automatically trigger grinding?
Compak lists a portafilter detector as an option. Confirm that feature on the selected configuration instead of assuming that every Bolt has the sensor.
Should it be paired with an automatic tamper?
An automatic tamper can make the pressing step more repeatable across staff. It does not replace weighing, grind adjustment or even distribution. Choose a Cube tamping base that matches your actual basket.
