Best value under $1k for a high quality grinder
I think this is the end game grinder for me! The stock espresso burrs are fine burrs, but went ahead and upgraded with SSP HU espresso burrs. On my existing DF54 (which is a fine grinder by the way), I swapped out the stock burrs for brew burrs. No need to compromise on burr capabilities with espresso or pour over. I ran around 8 lb. of cheap beans through the DF83V v2 to season the SSP burrs. About two days later everything settled into place, and I'm pulling the best espresso shots I've ever pulled (with both my Flair 58+2 w/VST 25g basket and GCP w/BG PID, also using a VST 25g basket). It might be possible for someone more skilled to do better than I'm doing, but I think I've reached the pinnacle of what I can appreciate with my skills and palette.
So, very happy and satisfied with the DF83V v2!
Excellent customer sevice
I had been looking at various upgrades for my espresso setup. I went with the stock espresso burrs. So far, I've put about 4 lbs of beans through it, 3 of which are just for seasoning. It's quick, quiet, and with some RDT, the retention is almost non-existent. Definitely a great upgrade to my basic Breville 870 setup.
I hoped the DF83V upsides would justify the price. After replacing the burrs with the SSP HU burrs, I did a side by side comparison with my 10 yr old Rancilio Rocky. Mind you, I have not “broken in” the burrs completely yet. Here’s my take-away about the Turin:
1. By far, much quieter than the Rocky
2. Grinds 18 grams in about 4 seconds, Rocky-16 seconds
3. Provided a little more balanced flavor in a shot but I don’t have a refined palette.
4. My scale shows .1-.3 grams less sometimes than pre-grind. I’ve opened it up but there’s practically nothing in the chamber. Could be my scale?
5. Super easy to disassemble, clean and zero.
I wanted a single doser with little retention and I got more out of the purchase than I expected.
