Turin SD40S vs De’Longhi Dedica KG521M

The Turin SD40S and De’Longhi Dedica KG521M take different approaches to dosing. The SD40S is a compact grinder for weighed individual doses; the KG521M uses a larger hopper, display and selectable grind settings. This is a legacy-model comparison: the SD40S is not currently offered as an active product in our catalog.

What distinguishes the SD40S
Our original specification describes an aluminum body, bellows and a cup held at the base by a magnet. The collar arrangement differs from the SK40’s worm-drive mechanism, so these grinders should not be described as identical. The bellows help move loose grounds but do not guarantee that no coffee remains inside.
What the Dedica controls offer
De’Longhi’s KG521M support page identifies 18 grind settings and a portafilter adapter. The display makes portion selection convenient when using one coffee repeatedly. Check the manual for your exact regional version and verify adapter fit; sharing the Dedica name with an espresso machine does not make every accessory universally compatible.
Match the grinder to the basket
A pressurized basket is more tolerant of a broad grind range than a conventional basket that relies primarily on the coffee puck for resistance. For non-pressurized espresso, ask whether the usable adjustments can produce the recipe you want. A fine label on the dial is not proof of small enough increments for every light roast or basket. Do not modify a grinder to bypass its intended adjustment limits.
Switching coffee and maintaining consistency
The SD40S is convenient when one drink is decaf and the next uses a different bean. A hopper-fed routine is convenient when everyone uses the same blend. Check grounds weight in both cases: programmed portions and weighed beans each leave room for variation if coffee remains in the grinder. Clean accessible burr and chute parts dry, with the machine unplugged.

Request a working demonstration, check the collar and cup, and confirm parts and seller support before purchasing a used SD40S.
