Choose the Turin SK40 when precise espresso adjustment is the main goal. The original Baratza Encore is a straightforward option for filter brewing and easy stepped changes. This comparison is about the original Encore, not the Encore ESP or ESP Pro, which have different espresso-focused features.

Why espresso adjustment matters
A grinder can reach a fine setting yet offer changes that are too large for a particular non-pressurized espresso recipe. The SK40’s continuous adjustment lets you work between reference marks. That is helpful when one small change in puck resistance determines whether a shot flows well. Grind is still only one variable: basket dose, distribution and yield need to remain consistent.
What the original Encore does well
Baratza presents the original Encore primarily as a filter-coffee grinder with 40 settings. Turning the hopper makes changes easy to record and repeat. That is convenient for a household brewing drip, pour-over or French press. A plastic exterior by itself is not evidence of poor grind quality or short life; serviceability and available replacement parts deserve consideration.
Do not confuse the Encore and Encore ESP
The Encore ESP uses a different adjustment approach, with finer espresso-oriented increments in its lower range. Advice about that grinder should not be copied onto the original Encore. Likewise, the original Encore does not have a built-in programmable dose timer merely because other Baratza models do.
Single dosing and everyday cleanup
With the SK40, weigh beans and use a consistent bellows routine before checking output. With the Encore, keep the bin seated and avoid leaving more beans in the hopper than your routine needs. Either grinder can retain some coffee. Clean the burrs and grounds path according to its manual, and reassess the setting after reassembly.
Where your money is best spent
For mostly filter coffee, buy the workflow you find easiest and save room in the budget for fresh coffee, a scale and a good brewer. For non-pressurized espresso, prioritize fine adjustment from the outset. If you want a compact flat-burr single-dose alternative, compare the Turin DF54.
The SK40 is the more direct espresso choice in this pairing; the original Encore remains a reasonable filter-first choice. A higher price or metal body is not, by itself, a reason to replace a grinder already making coffee you enjoy.
