Turin DF83 Gen 2 vs DF64 Gen 2.7: Which Should You Choose?
The Turin DF83 Gen 2 and DF64 Gen 2.7 are fixed-speed, flat-burr single-dose grinders. Both offer stepless adjustment, bellows and plasma anti-static systems. The decision is whether you want the larger 83mm platform and are comfortable with its size, weight and burr costs, or prefer a smaller 64mm platform with a broad upgrade ecosystem.
Choose the DF64 Gen 2.7 for a compact everyday espresso/filter station and access to compatible 64mm burr choices. Choose the DF83 Gen 2 when you specifically want an 83mm burr platform and have the space for a heavier grinder. A bigger burr is not, by itself, proof of a better-tasting cup.
This specification-based comparison covers the current U.S. listings checked on October 16, 2026. It does not report a matched-coffee speed, retention, noise or taste test. These are the fixed-speed DF83 and DF64; the variable-speed DF83V and DF64V are separate models.

What 83mm Changes—and What It Does Not Prove
The DF83 gives you a larger burr format and a higher-rated motor. That can make it attractive when you already prefer an 83mm burr design or expect to grind larger doses. Motor wattage is not a measured grinding-time result, and different burr geometry can matter more to the cup than diameter.
The DF64 takes less height and weighs less. Its 64mm platform has many compatible aftermarket choices, but the stock set is a sensible starting point. Learn its dialing behavior before spending more on a burr change.
Burr Choices and Upgrade Cost
Confirm the factory-installed burrs in the exact product selector. Do not compare an older stainless-steel DF83 review with the current Red Titanium configuration as though they were identical. The DF64 Gen 2.7 also differs from the original DF64 and earlier Gen 2 production.
SSP choices should be matched to the precise burr size, mounting and grinder revision. An 83mm set cannot substitute for a 64mm set. Optional SSP sets require customer installation and alignment unless the offer explicitly says otherwise. Read the DF64 SSP burr guide and the DF83 burr-options guide with their revision notes in mind.
Daily Workflow and Maintenance
Both grinders ask you to weigh beans separately. Use the correct startup routine, grind into the cup, use the bellows as directed and transfer the grounds to your brewer. Neither includes automatic dose weighing. For repeatable comparisons, keep the same coffee, dose, recipe and bellows routine.
Keep the chute and plasma probes clean using the model’s instructions. Low retention is a design goal, not a guarantee of zero retained coffee. Do not infer exchanged grounds solely from a matched input and output weight.
Allow space above the DF83 for its bellows and access to the collar. For either grinder, leave room to lift out parts for cleaning. The DF64 cleaning guide links the manufacturer manual and explains revision checks.
What About DF64V and DF83V?
If changing RPM is essential to your experiments, compare the DF64V Gen 3 or DF83V v3. Their motors, bodies and grounds paths differ from the fixed-speed models here. The current DF64V Gen 3 listing specifies a 400W motor; older 300W comparison tables describe a different specification.
Make the Final Choice
- Choose DF64 Gen 2.7 for a smaller everyday setup, lower weight and the 64mm burr ecosystem.
- Choose DF83 Gen 2 for a deliberate move to 83mm burrs, with room and budget for the larger platform.
- Choose by your coffee: prioritize the burr geometry and brew method you will use, then compare footprint, cleaning access and total ownership cost.
