How to Fix Espresso Channeling

To reduce espresso channeling, start with a clean basket, a suitable dose, even distribution and a level tamp. Channeling happens when water takes easier paths through the coffee bed, leaving extraction uneven. Changing one preparation variable at a time makes the cause easier to find.

Check the signs without overreading them

Repeated side jets or pronounced uneven flow from a bottomless portafilter can indicate a preparation problem. However, a blocked basket hole or residue can also deflect flow. Unequal output from two spouts may reflect a tilted machine or the spout itself.

Holes in a spent puck are not conclusive evidence, and an attractive bottomless extraction is not proof of balanced flavor. Combine visual clues with taste and repeatability. Our bottomless portafilter guide explains what to observe.

Reset the preparation routine

  1. Clean and dry the basket. Inspect the holes and remove coffee residue using the manufacturer’s cleaning instructions.
  2. Check basket fit and dose. Use the basket’s recommended range and allow appropriate headspace. Do not overfill to improve puck appearance.
  3. Distribute evenly. Break up clumps and spread the grounds through the bed, including its edges.
  4. Tamp level. Fully compress the grounds and lift cleanly. Avoid knocking the portafilter afterward.

Reassess the grind and recipe

If a fine grind produces slow, erratic flow, grinding finer again may make matters worse. Try a small coarser adjustment while keeping dose and target beverage weight fixed. If the shot is fast and thin after preparation checks, try a modestly finer setting.

Do not change grind, dose, temperature and pressure together. Follow how to dial in espresso and compare several shots at each useful setting.

Know when the machine needs attention

If uneven flow persists across sensible recipes, inspect the shower screen and basket and follow the machine’s cleaning guidance. Sudden changes in pressure or water delivery may warrant service. A wet spent puck by itself is a separate observation; read why water remains on top of an espresso puck before changing a good-tasting recipe.
