SL28 Coffee Variety: Kenyan History
SL28 is an Arabica coffee selection strongly associated with Kenya and prized for the intense fruit, sweetness, acidity, and aromatic complexity it can produce under good growing and processing conditions. It became one of the most recognizable names in specialty coffee because of both its cup quality and its role in Kenyan coffee production.
Where the name comes from
The “SL” designation refers to Scott Agricultural Laboratories, which evaluated and selected coffee material in Kenya during the colonial period. SL28 was one of the selections that proved agronomically useful and capable of excellent cup quality.
Agronomic characteristics
SL28 is generally known for relatively tall growth and good quality potential. It has often been associated with useful drought tolerance compared with some other Arabica material, but it is not broadly resistant to major diseases such as coffee leaf rust or coffee berry disease. Farm performance depends heavily on site, nutrition, pruning, rainfall, and disease pressure.
What does SL28 taste like?
Well-grown and well-processed SL28 can show blackcurrant, red berry, citrus, floral, wine-like, and intensely sweet characteristics. Those notes are not guaranteed by genetics alone. Elevation, soil, climate, cherry ripeness, fermentation, drying, storage, and roast profile all shape the final cup.
SL28 outside Kenya
Although identified most closely with Kenya, SL28 has been planted in other producing countries by farms interested in its quality potential. As with Gesha and other high-value varieties, the same genetic material can express differently in another environment.
SL28 vs. SL34
The two names often appear together in Kenyan lots, but they are distinct selections with different agronomic histories. Many export lots contain both, along with newer disease-resistant cultivars and other varieties.
