Radial Burr Alignment in Coffee Grinders: Concentricity, Burr Centering, and Grind Consistency

Radial burr alignment describes how concentrically a grinder's burrs and carriers are centered around the rotational axis. If a burr runs eccentrically, the effective gap can vary as it rotates even when the opposing burr face is otherwise parallel.

Radial vs. axial alignment

Axial alignment concerns whether the opposing burr faces are parallel across the grinding plane. Radial alignment concerns centering around the shaft or rotational axis. A grinder can be reasonably good in one dimension and imperfect in the other.

What causes radial error?

  • Burr or carrier manufacturing tolerances
  • Debris trapped between a burr and mounting surface
  • Damaged or poorly seated carriers
  • Bearing or shaft play
  • Off-center mounting features or fastener clearance

Because grinder construction varies, the practical method for checking concentricity is design-specific.

What can it affect?

Significant eccentricity can create a changing burr gap, uneven contact near chirp, noise, and potentially a broader or less repeatable particle distribution. Severe mechanical runout can also accelerate localized wear.

Do not assume alignment is the problem

Shot inconsistency can come from changing coffee, burr seasoning, retention, feed behavior, grind drift, puck preparation, or machine temperature. A marker wipe test is mainly useful for face contact and does not fully diagnose every form of radial runout.

If a grinder performs consistently and burrs do not show abnormal contact, unnecessary shimming or disassembly can make alignment worse. Follow manufacturer service guidance before altering carrier geometry.
