Micro-Channeling in Espresso: Small Flow Paths, Extraction, and Diagnosis
Micro-channeling is localized uneven flow through an espresso puck that may be too small to create the dramatic sprays associated with obvious channeling. Water still finds lower-resistance paths, so parts of the puck extract more heavily while other areas receive less effective contact.
Why it can be hard to see
A bottomless portafilter may show a generally centered stream even when small flow imbalances exist inside the puck. Micro-channels can merge before espresso exits the basket, so visual appearance is useful but not a complete extraction map.
Common causes
Uneven grounds distribution, clumps, density differences near the basket wall, an unlevel tamp, puck cracks, poor basket fill, excessive headspace, or very fine grinding can all encourage localized flow. Coffee fines can also migrate and alter resistance during the shot.
Flavor clues
A shot can taste simultaneously sharp and drying because different puck regions reach different extraction levels. Inconsistent shot-to-shot taste, unexplained fast spots, or sprays are reasons to inspect puck preparation rather than simply extending brew time.
How to reduce it
Use a consistent dose, distribute grounds evenly, tamp level, keep the basket rim clean, and choose a grind that produces reasonable flow without requiring extreme puck resistance. WDT can help when clumps or uneven density are a problem.
