Low Water Flow in Espresso Machines

Low flow is a condition where an espresso machine delivers less water through the group than expected. It can be caused by the building supply, water treatment, pump, valves, restrictors, scale, or debris, so diagnosis should follow the hydraulic path instead of assuming the pump is bad.

Check the simple restrictions first

Confirm the reservoir is full or the plumbed shutoff valve is open. A kinked hose, exhausted water filter, clogged sediment cartridge, or low building pressure can reduce supply before water ever reaches the machine.

Measure free-flow water debit

Technicians often compare group water debit—the free-flow rate without coffee—to the machine’s expected behavior. Low debit with no portafilter points toward a machine or supply restriction rather than the coffee puck.

Common internal causes

Scale or debris can restrict gigleurs, flowmeters, solenoid valves, shower screens, and narrow tubing. A weak pump or failing capacitor can also reduce flow, but replacing a pump before checking restrictions can miss the actual problem.

Flow and pressure are different

A machine can have high static pressure yet poor flow through a restriction. Conversely, high free-flow water debit does not guarantee correct brew pressure against the puck. Both measurements matter.

Service safely

Internal hydraulic work can expose hot water, steam, pressure, and mains electricity. Descaling is not a universal fix and should only be performed when appropriate for the machine. See our published backflushing vs. descaling guide.
