How to Pour a Latte Art Heart: Milk Texture, Flow, Placement, and Cut-Through
The latte-art heart is a foundational free-poured pattern made by creating a round white shape on the crema and then drawing a thin stream through it to form the point. The design is simple in outline but depends on good espresso crema, integrated microfoam, and precise pitcher control.
Start with pourable microfoam
Milk should look glossy and flow like wet paint, with bubbles too small to see individually. Over-aerated milk sits on top in stiff foam, while under-aerated milk disappears into the espresso and gives little white contrast. After steaming, swirl the pitcher until milk and foam are fully integrated.

Build the base first
Begin from higher above the cup with a relatively thin stream so milk sinks beneath the crema and establishes the drink's base. Swirl the espresso before pouring if needed so the crema is even rather than broken into dry patches.
Bring the pitcher close to draw white
As the cup fills, lower the pitcher close to the surface and increase flow. The milk stream now has less energy and the microfoam spreads across the surface. Hold the pour near the center and allow a white circle to grow.
Create the point
When the circle is large enough, lift the pitcher slightly to thin the stream and move forward through the center. This cut-through pulls the round shape into the bottom point of a heart.
Common problems
A tiny heart often comes from pouring too slowly or keeping the pitcher too high. A blob without a point usually means the cut-through was too thick. Washed-out contrast often comes from thin milk or overmixing before the design phase.
