Thermosiphon Stall in Espresso Machines

Thermosiphon stall is a condition in which the natural hot-water circulation that heats an E61 or similar espresso group slows dramatically or stops. When the loop is not circulating correctly, the grouphead can run cooler than intended even though the boiler itself appears to be at normal temperature.

What does a stalled thermosiphon look like?

Common clues include an E61 group that remains unexpectedly cool after a normal warm-up period, unusually low brew temperature, a large temperature drop between shots, or a machine that suddenly behaves differently despite unchanged boiler settings.

What can cause the circulation to stall?

  • Air trapped in the thermosiphon loop
  • Scale or debris restricting a passage or jet
  • An incorrectly assembled or kinked flow path
  • Machine angle or plumbing changes that interfere with natural convection
  • Abnormal boiler water level or temperature
  • Service work that left a restriction or air pocket

Why restrictions matter so much

Thermosiphon flow is driven by a relatively small density difference rather than a dedicated pump. A restriction that might seem minor in a pumped circuit can have a much larger effect on natural circulation. Scale in jets or narrow passages is therefore especially relevant.

Do not diagnose by group temperature alone

A cool group can also result from insufficient warm-up time, a failed group heater on machines that use one, incorrect boiler control, a bad temperature sensor, or another thermal problem. Diagnosis should consider the whole machine.

Service caution

Thermosiphon circuits are connected to hot, pressurized systems. Internal inspection, descaling, or disassembly should follow the manufacturer’s service instructions and may require a qualified technician. Do not open hot boiler or group plumbing under pressure.
