Espresso Machine Pressurestats
A pressurestat is a pressure-operated electrical switch used on many espresso machines to cycle the steam-boiler heating element on and off. Because steam pressure corresponds closely to saturated steam temperature, controlling pressure provides a practical way to control boiler operating temperature.
How a pressurestat cycles
A small tube connects the pressurestat to the steam boiler. As boiler pressure rises, a diaphragm or bellows mechanism moves until the electrical contacts open and shut off the heater. When pressure falls to a lower threshold, the contacts close and heating resumes.
The difference between the cut-in and cut-out points is the pressure differential or deadband. A machine therefore normally cycles through a range rather than holding one perfectly fixed pressure.
Pressurestat vs. PID
A pressurestat responds mechanically to pressure. A PID system uses an electronic controller and temperature sensor to modulate or cycle heating based on measured temperature. Either approach can work well when properly designed, but a PID generally offers more configurable electronic control while a pressurestat is mechanically simpler.
What steam pressure changes
Raising the pressurestat setting increases steam-boiler temperature and can increase steaming intensity. It also changes the temperature of boiler water used for hot-water service and can influence heat-exchanger behavior on HX machines. Do not raise pressure beyond the manufacturer's specified range.
Common symptoms of trouble
- Boiler pressure rising past the normal cutoff
- Heater failing to energize despite low boiler pressure
- Very wide or erratic cycling
- Rapid contact chatter
Pressurestats switch substantial electrical loads directly or through a contactor. Internal adjustment and electrical diagnosis should follow the manufacturer's service procedure, with power disconnected and the boiler safely depressurized when required.
