Espresso Machine Pressure Gauges
An espresso-machine pressure gauge displays pressure at a specific point in the hydraulic or steam system. The number is only meaningful when you know what the gauge is connected to and whether water is flowing.
Common gauge types

A dual gauge may show steam pressure on one scale and brew pressure on another.
Static vs. dynamic pressure
Static pressure is measured when fluid is not moving. Dynamic pressure is measured while water flows against resistance. A pump gauge can show one value against a blind basket and another during an actual espresso shot because the coffee puck is a changing hydraulic restriction.
Why 9 bar is not always exactly 9 bar at the puck
Pressure drops across restrictors, valves, tubing, and the coffee bed. Gauge calibration and gauge location also matter. A machine adjusted to roughly 9 bar against a blind basket may display a different pressure while brewing coffee, especially on machines with flow control or variable pumps.
Using a gauge for diagnosis
A gauge is useful for spotting trends: no pressure, unusually high pressure, low pressure under load, unstable readings, or abnormal steam-boiler cycling. But do not adjust an OPV, pump, or pressurestat simply because a number looks unfamiliar. First confirm the machine specification, gauge type, and test condition.
