How to Clean an Espresso Machine Steam
Steam-wand cleaning is the routine removal of milk residue from the outside of the wand, steam-tip holes, and any internal areas the manufacturer specifies for cleaning. Milk proteins and sugars dry quickly on hot metal, so cleaning immediately after every pitcher is much easier than removing baked-on residue later.
After every milk pitcher
- Close the steam valve.
- Wipe the wand immediately with a clean damp cloth dedicated to the steam area.
- Purge the wand briefly to clear milk or condensation near the tip.
- Check that all steam-tip holes are flowing normally.
Do not leave the wand sitting in used milk while you prepare another drink. Besides hygiene concerns, dried residue becomes harder to remove and can restrict the tip.
If milk has baked onto the wand
Use the cleaning method approved by the machine manufacturer. A warm damp cloth can soften fresh residue. Purpose-made milk-system cleaner may be appropriate for removable steam tips or specific soak procedures. Avoid abrasive pads that scratch polished metal and create surfaces that are harder to keep clean.
Clearing a blocked steam tip
If one hole stops flowing, shut down and cool the equipment as required before removing the tip. Soak and clean the tip according to the service instructions. Use an appropriately sized cleaning tool only if permitted; enlarging a steam hole changes flow and steaming behavior.
Should the entire wand be soaked?
Not unless the manufacturer specifically instructs it. Submerging the wand high enough to reach joints or valves can allow liquid to enter areas that were not designed for soaking. On some machines, removing the steam tip is the safer cleaning approach.
Why purging after cleaning matters
After any approved cleaner is used, rinse components thoroughly and purge the wand before steaming milk again. Food-contact surfaces should not retain cleaner residue.
