Baratza brand history

Baratza was founded in 1999 by Kyle Anderson and Kyra Kennedy in the Seattle area. The company concentrated on home coffee grinders rather than treating the grinder as one appliance among hundreds. Early Solis- and Baratza-branded Maestro machines established the conical-burr architecture that later evolved into the Encore and Virtuoso families.¹

The brand became especially associated with repairability. Replaceable burrs, gearboxes, adjustment rings, switches, hoppers, and other components allowed owners to service many failures without discarding the entire machine. Encore, Encore ESP and Encore ESP Pro

The original Encore is primarily a brewed-coffee grinder. The ESP redesign adds a split adjustment system: smaller effective changes through the espresso range and larger changes for filter settings. The ESP Pro is the feature-led version for buyers who want still finer control. Buyers should not treat every Encore as interchangeable when pairing it with a non-pressurized espresso basket.

Virtuoso+

Virtuoso+ occupies the traditional premium-conical position above Encore. Its timer improves repeatability for a hopper workflow, but timed output still changes when coffee, roast level, or grind size changes. A scale remains useful.

Sette family

Sette grinders move coffee almost vertically through the burr set, which supports fast dosing and relatively low retained coffee. The 270 adds a micro-adjustment ring; the 270Wi doses by measured weight. Their sound, gearbox design, and workflow differ substantially from a heavy flat-burr single-dose grinder.

Vario and Forté families

These use compact flat burrs with separate macro and micro adjustment levers. Burr choice matters: steel brew-oriented and ceramic all-purpose configurations do not create the same cup or target the same workflow. Forté adds a more robust body and controls for demanding use.

For frequent bean changes, the DF54, DF64 Gen 2.7, and Creyke GF64 use a weighed single-dose workflow rather than Baratza’s usual hopper-and-bin format. The DF64 platform also offers a much broader aftermarket 64 mm burr ecosystem.

For a conventional hopper-fed espresso bar at home, the Eureka Mignon Specialita is a closer operational comparison to timed Baratza espresso models. For travel or powerless brewing, the Turin H40 V2 is a different but more portable solution than any electric Baratza.

What to compare before choosing

1. Workflow first: decide between weighed single dosing, a hopper and timer, grind by weight, manual grinding, or retail bag grinding.
2. Brew range: a grinder that can technically reach espresso and French press may still be optimized for one end of that range.

Can the original Encore grind espresso?

It can grind finely, but its adjustment spacing and intended workflow are better suited to filter coffee and pressurized baskets. Encore ESP models were specifically revised for more useful espresso control.

What is the difference between Sette 270 and 270Wi?

Both use the Sette grind path and macro/micro adjustment. The 270 doses by time; the 270Wi uses an integrated scale to stop at a target weight.
