Bottomless vs Spouted Portafilters

Choose a bottomless portafilter when you want to observe the basket outlet or gain cup clearance. Choose a spouted portafilter for contained pouring and splitting an extraction between cups. Either can make excellent espresso with the same compatible basket and recipe.

What changes below the basket?

A bottomless handle leaves the basket's underside exposed. A spouted handle collects espresso below the basket and directs it through one or more outlets. Removing the spouts does not automatically improve extraction or fix channeling.

The open underside makes a bottomless portafilter useful for observing flow.

Compare the daily workflow

• Visual feedback: bottomless makes spraying and uneven flow easier to see.
• Serving: double spouts make dividing one extraction more convenient.
• Cleanup: spouted handles have additional internal surfaces; bottomless shots can spray.
• Clearance: bottomless often leaves more room for a cup and scale.

A spout contains the mess from a poor extraction; it does not make the puck itself more forgiving.

Compatibility comes first

Match the machine model, locking-tab geometry, basket diameter, and basket depth. Nominal diameter alone is not enough. A new portafilter supplied with a different basket may require dialing in again because the basket changed, not because the handle is bottomless.

Keep or choose based on the job
