Black Obsidian Coffee Blend: Dark and Medium Roast Balance

Black Obsidian Coffee Blend, formerly known as Black Diamond Blend, combines separately developed dark- and medium-roast coffees for a layered cup with depth, balance, and versatility. Burundi coffee forms the base, while additional African and Indonesian coffees build the opening aroma, body, and lingering finish.

Each component receives a roasting profile suited to that coffee before the finished coffees are blended. This approach allows the blend to retain more individual character than a one-profile roast. The recipe grew from Black Powder Coffee's 2015 Holiday Blend and became a year-round favorite.

What Does Black Obsidian Coffee Taste Like?

Black Obsidian is built around contrast. Medium-roast components preserve balance and origin character, while darker components add depth and a more substantial finish. Burundi coffee supports the center of the cup, and the African and Indonesian components add complexity at the beginning and end.

  • Aroma: Rich and inviting
  • Body: Full and rounded
  • Roast character: A blend of medium-roast balance and dark-roast depth
  • Finish: Lingering and structured
  • Overall style: Bold without relying on a single heavy roast profile

Why Are the Coffees Roasted Separately?

Different coffee origins do not always reach their best flavor with the same roast timing and heat application. Roasting the blend components individually allows the roaster to develop each coffee for its intended role. The coffees are then combined to create a more deliberate progression from aroma to body to finish.

This makes Black Obsidian a useful everyday blend for people who find light roasts too delicate but want more complexity than a uniformly dark coffee.

Recommended Brewing Methods

AeroPress Recipe

  • 16.5 grams of medium-coarse coffee
  • 250 grams of water
  • Pour 40 grams of water over the grounds and bloom for 80 seconds
  • Stir for approximately five seconds
  • Add the remaining water and wait 40 seconds
  • Press the plunger slowly and serve

This recipe emphasizes the blend's balance and rounded body. Adjust grind size or steep time if you prefer a stronger or lighter result.

Automatic Drip

Use the drip-ground option or grind whole beans to a medium setting. Start near 60 grams of coffee per liter of water. This method provides a clean, balanced version of the blend for everyday brewing.

French Press

Choose the coarse-ground option or use a coarse burr-grinder setting. Start with a 1:15 ratio and steep for about four minutes. French press emphasizes body and dark-roast depth.

Espresso

Choose espresso grind only if it matches your equipment, or order whole bean for better dial-in control. Begin near a 1:2 brew ratio and adjust based on flow and taste. The blend can produce a bold shot that pairs naturally with milk.

Cold Brew

Use coarse coffee and cold water at approximately 1:8 for concentrate. Steep under refrigeration for 12–18 hours, filter, and dilute to taste.

Choose the Right Grind and Bag Size

Whole bean offers maximum freshness and works best when you have a burr grinder. Coarse is intended for French press and many cold-brew methods. Drip suits most automatic coffee makers, while espresso provides a fine starting grind for espresso-style brewing.

The 1-pound bag is a practical choice for home use. The 5-pound option is better suited to offices, frequent coffee drinkers, and higher-volume brewing. For more grind control, browse our home coffee grinders.

Who Is Black Obsidian Best For?

  • Drinkers who like bold coffee with more balance than a conventional dark roast
  • AeroPress users looking for a proven starting recipe
  • Homes or offices needing both 1-pound and 5-pound options
  • Espresso and milk-drink fans who want a substantial cup
  • Coffee drinkers exploring a Burundi-based multi-origin blend
