For automatic drip, start with 30 grams of coffee and 480 grams of filtered water, a 1:16 brew ratio. Use a medium grind if grinding whole beans. Taste a few sips before adding milk or sweetener: the apple-pie aroma may suggest sweetness even though aroma alone does not establish actual sugar content.

If the cup seems weak beneath the flavoring, grind slightly finer before greatly increasing the dose. If the coffee becomes dry or harsh, move coarser. Keep the dose and water constant while adjusting extraction so you can tell whether the grind change helped. Degassing and storage age can also change flow, especially with whole beans.
