Heat Exchanger (HX) Espresso Machines
Find the machine for your everyday espresso ritual.
Choosing your equipment
Heat-exchanger espresso machines, often called HX machines, appeal to home baristas who want espresso and milk steaming in the same session. Brew water travels through a heat exchanger associated with the steam boiler. Compare the model’s temperature management, steam performance and warm-up routine before choosing your machine.
Heat Exchanger (HX) Espresso Machines buying guide
Match an HX machine to your drink routine
If lattes, cappuccinos and flat whites are central to your routine, simultaneous brewing and steaming can make preparation smoother. Consider the largest sequence of drinks you will prepare, not just the daily total. A larger cabinet or boiler is useful only if its capacity fits your needs.
Understand temperature management
HX designs differ in how they manage brewing temperature and idle heat. Follow the manufacturer’s recommended flush routine where applicable rather than applying a universal rule. PID control may regulate the steam boiler; it does not automatically provide the same direct brew-temperature control as a dedicated brew boiler.
Compare pumps, water supply and controls separately
Pump type, reservoir or plumbed operation, pre-infusion and flow control are separate buying decisions. Do not infer plumbing capability from pump terminology alone. For Turin Gallatin models, compare the exact V, R and DB specifications: the DB is a dual-boiler alternative, not an HX variant.
Plan warm-up and care
Include group and portafilter warm-up in your morning routine. Use water that meets the machine’s requirements and follow its cleaning instructions. Compare service access, countertop depth and steam-wand clearance alongside finish and appearance, and pair the machine with a capable espresso grinder.

Heat Exchanger (HX) Espresso Machines FAQs
Heat Exchanger (HX) Espresso Machines FAQs
What does HX mean on an espresso machine?
HX stands for heat exchanger. It refers to how brew water is heated, rather than to the grinder, shot controls or number of group heads.
Can an HX machine brew and steam together?
Many heat-exchanger espresso machines are designed for simultaneous brewing and steaming. Check the exact model and its operating instructions.
Do all heat-exchanger machines need a cooling flush?
No single routine applies to every HX design. Follow the manufacturer’s temperature-management instructions, especially after the machine has been idle.
Is a PID-controlled HX the same as a dual boiler?
No. PID is a control method; dual boiler describes the heating architecture. Check which temperature the controller regulates and how the machine manages brew water.
When should I consider a dual boiler instead?
Compare a dual boiler if independent brew-temperature control, experimenting with different coffees or your preferred steaming routine makes the additional system useful to you.
