Why Choose the DF64 Gen 2.7?
Precise stepless adjustment
The stepless adjustment system provides an effectively unlimited number of settings between coarse and fine. This allows small grind-size changes when dialing in espresso while still providing the range needed for pour-over, drip coffee, AeroPress, French press and cold brew.
Low-retention single-dose workflow
The DF64 Gen 2.7 is designed to minimize the amount of ground coffee left inside the grinding chamber and chute. Its bellows help clear retained grounds after each dose, reducing waste and limiting the amount of older coffee carried into the next grind.
Plasma anti-static system
A plasma generator in the exit chute reduces static electricity and helps keep coffee grounds from clinging to the chute and dosing cup. This produces a cleaner workflow and generally eliminates the need for RDT under normal conditions.
Heavy-duty metal construction
The grinder’s metal body, simple controls and 250W AC motor are designed for dependable daily use. Its straightforward construction also avoids unnecessary electronic controls that could create additional points of failure.
Extensive 64mm burr compatibility
The 64mm flat-burr platform gives owners access to a broad aftermarket that includes compatible Turin, SSP and other 64mm burr sets. The grinder can be adapted for traditional espresso, modern light-roast espresso, filter coffee or a balance of multiple brewing methods.
Compact countertop footprint
At approximately 10 inches deep, 5.2 inches wide and 12 inches high, the DF64 Gen 2.7 provides full-size 64mm burr performance without occupying a large amount of counter space.
Available Colors and Package Contents
The DF64 Gen 2.7 is available in black, white, red, blue, silver and grey. Availability varies by color, burr selection and whether an in-stock or preorder configuration is selected.
The current package includes:
- DF64 Gen 2.7 grinder
- Factory-installed Turin 64mm burrs selected with the order
- Bellows and lid
- Black dosing cup
- Silicone cup-support wedge
- Metal grind-setting indicator

- Power cord for standard US electrical outlets
SSP burrs purchased with the grinder are packaged separately and are not installed or aligned before shipping. Package contents can occasionally change during manufacturing, so the current product photographs and notices should be used to confirm what is included.
What Changed in DF64 Gen 2.7?
The DF64 Gen 2 has received several practical updates since its original release. Its core 64mm burr platform, stepless adjustment and 250W motor remain the same.
| Version | Meaningful changes |
|---|---|
| Original Gen 2 | Introduced the redesigned grinding chamber, plasma anti-static system, integrated anti-popcorn device, improved declumper and updated dosing components. |
| Later Gen 2 revisions | Updated the inner chute and plasma-probe arrangement, added a metal power button and replaced the earlier dosing-collar arrangement with a black dosing cup and silicone cup-support wedge. |
| Gen 2.7 | Introduced a convex anti-popcorn blocker. Earlier versions used a flat blocker that could allow a few beans to remain on top instead of feeding into the grinding chamber. |
Which DF64 Burrs Should I Choose?
The best burr choice depends on your preferred brewing methods and flavor profile.
| Burr | Best suited for | Cup profile |
|---|---|---|
| Turin stainless steel | Espresso and filter coffee | Balanced and versatile |
| Red Titanium | Espresso and filter coffee | Similar geometry with a coated surface |
| SSP High Uniformity | Espresso | Greater body and intensity |
| SSP Multipurpose | Light-roast espresso and filter coffee | Higher clarity and flavor separation |
| SSP Cast Lab Sweet | Espresso and filter coffee | Balanced sweetness, body and clarity |
Turin stainless-steel burrs
Choose the stock stainless-steel burrs if you want a versatile and economical option for both espresso and filter coffee. They are a good starting point for most buyers.
Red Titanium burrs
The Red Titanium burrs use a similar general-purpose geometry with a coated surface. They are also suited to both espresso and filter coffee.
SSP High Uniformity burrs
SSP High Uniformity burrs are designed primarily for espresso. They are a strong choice for users seeking greater body, intensity and a more traditional espresso presentation.
SSP Multipurpose burrs
SSP Multipurpose burrs emphasize clarity and flavor separation. They are especially well suited to light-roast espresso and filter coffee.
SSP Cast Lab Sweet burrs
SSP Cast Lab Sweet burrs provide a middle ground between the body of espresso-focused burrs and the clarity of multipurpose burrs. They are a good choice for users seeking sweetness, balance and versatility.
SSP burrs are supplied separately. Espresso Outlet does not install or align them before shipping.
DF64 Gen 2.7 vs. DF54 vs. DF64V
The DF64 Gen 2.7, Turin DF54 and Turin DF64V are all low-retention single-dose grinders capable of grinding for espresso and filter coffee. The primary differences are burr size, motor design, speed control, aftermarket burr selection and price.
| Feature | DF54 | DF64 Gen 2.7 | DF64V |
|---|---|---|---|
| Burr size | 54mm flat burrs | 64mm flat burrs | 64mm flat burrs |
| Motor | 150W AC motor | 250W AC motor | 300W brushless DC motor |
| Speed control | Fixed speed | Fixed speed | Variable speed |

| Plasma anti-static system | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Aftermarket burr selection | More limited 54mm selection | Extensive 64mm selection, including SSP | Extensive 64mm selection, including SSP |
| Best for | Buyers seeking a compact and affordable grinder | Most espresso and filter-coffee users | Enthusiasts who want variable speed and greater control |
| Primary advantage | Lower price and smaller footprint | Strong balance of performance, versatility and value | Adjustable RPM and premium motor |
| Primary consideration | Fewer aftermarket burr options | Louder than some premium grinders | Higher price |
Which grinder should you choose?
Choose the DF54 if you want a compact and affordable single-dose grinder and do not expect to experiment extensively with aftermarket burrs.
Choose the DF64 Gen 2.7 if you want a versatile grinder with a more powerful motor, 64mm burrs and numerous future burr-upgrade options. For most home espresso and filter-coffee users, it provides the strongest balance of performance, flexibility and price.
Choose the DF64V if you want variable-speed control, a brushless motor and the ability to experiment with how different grinding speeds affect workflow and flavor.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is the DF64 Gen 2.7 good for espresso?
Yes. The DF64 Gen 2.7 is designed to grind precisely enough for espresso. Its stepless adjustment allows very small grind-size changes, while its 64mm flat burrs produce consistent grounds for dialing in a shot. Different burr options also allow users to tailor the grinder toward greater body, balance or clarity.
Can the DF64 Gen 2.7 grind for pour-over?
Yes. Its broad adjustment range allows it to grind for pour-over, drip coffee, AeroPress, French press and cold brew in addition to espresso. The stock Turin stainless-steel burrs are a versatile choice for users who regularly switch between espresso and filter coffee.
How much coffee does the DF64 Gen 2.7 retain?
The DF64 Gen 2.7 is designed for very low retention. The exact amount varies with the coffee, grind setting and user workflow, but it is generally only a small fraction of a gram when the bellows are used correctly.
The DF64 should be described as a low-retention grinder, not a zero-retention grinder. No grinder eliminates every trace of retained coffee under all conditions.
Does the DF64 Gen 2.7 require RDT?
RDT is generally not required. The built-in plasma generator reduces static and helps prevent grounds from clinging to the chute and dosing cup. Extremely dry coffee or certain roast levels may still produce some static, so a very light mist can be used when necessary. Avoid introducing excessive moisture into the grinder.
Should I hot-start the DF64 Gen 2.7?
Hot-starting means turning on the grinder before adding the coffee beans. This can help the beans feed through the burrs consistently and reduces the chance of the motor stalling when grinding dense, lightly roasted coffee at a fine espresso setting.
Hot-starting is particularly helpful for light-roast espresso. Users can also start the grinder with the beans already loaded, but the same workflow should be used consistently when comparing grind settings and extraction results.
Do the DF64 burrs need to be seasoned?
New burrs can change slightly as their cutting surfaces wear in during initial use. You do not need to discard a large amount of good coffee simply to season the burrs. They will naturally season through normal use, although grind settings and shot behavior may become more stable over time.
When installing a different burr set, expect to dial in the grinder again.
Does the DF64 Gen 2.7 need burr alignment?
Most users should begin using the grinder normally before considering burr alignment. Factory alignment is generally sufficient for normal home espresso and filter-coffee use.
Alignment may be worth investigating if the grinder has an unusually narrow usable range, produces inconsistent results despite proper dialing in, or if a new aftermarket burr set has been installed. Espresso Outlet does not perform custom burr alignment as part of the standard purchase.
Can SSP burrs be installed in the DF64 Gen 2.7?
Yes. The grinder accepts compatible 64mm SSP burrs, including High Uniformity, Multipurpose and Cast Lab Sweet burrs.
SSP burrs ordered with the grinder are shipped separately and are not installed or aligned before shipping.
Can the DF64 grind directly into a portafilter?
The DF64 Gen 2.7 can be used with a compatible portafilter positioned beneath the chute. However, using the included dosing cup generally provides a cleaner and more consistent workflow, particularly when the portafilter size or shape does not sit securely beneath the grinder.
How often should the DF64 Gen 2.7 be cleaned?
Cleaning frequency depends on usage, roast level and the amount of oil present on the coffee beans. The chute should be checked periodically for accumulated grounds, and the grinding chamber should be cleaned when retention increases, grounds begin clumping, or flavor becomes less consistent.
Always unplug the grinder before cleaning. Use a brush or grinder-safe vacuum to remove dry coffee residue. Do not introduce water into the motor, grinding chamber or electrical components.
Detailed instructions are available in the DF64 Gen 2 getting-started and troubleshooting guide.
Is the DF64 Gen 2.7 noisy?
The DF64 Gen 2.7 uses a powerful 250W AC motor and is not designed to be silent. Its sound is noticeable, particularly when grinding lighter-roasted coffee, but it processes a typical dose quickly. Buyers who prioritize a different motor sound or adjustable grinding speed may prefer the DF64V.
DF64 Gen 2.7 vs. Niche Zero: What is the difference?
The principal difference is burr design. The DF64 Gen 2.7 uses replaceable 64mm flat burrs, while the Niche Zero uses conical burrs.
Flat burrs are often selected by users seeking greater flavor clarity and separation, particularly with lighter-roasted coffee. Conical burrs are often associated with greater body and a more blended flavor presentation, especially with medium and darker roasts.
The DF64 also provides a broad selection of aftermarket 64mm burrs, making it easier to change the grinder’s flavor profile without replacing the entire grinder. The better choice ultimately depends on preferred coffee style, workflow and budget.
Does Espresso Outlet align the burrs?
Espresso Outlet does not perform custom burr alignment as part of the standard grinder purchase. The grinder arrives with its selected Turin burrs factory-installed. Most customers can use the grinder normally without performing an alignment procedure.
What comes with the DF64 Gen 2.7?
The current package includes the grinder, factory-installed Turin burrs selected with the order, bellows and lid, black dosing cup, silicone cup-support wedge, metal grind-setting indicator, cleaning brush and US power cord. SSP burrs, when purchased, are packaged separately.
What changed in DF64 version 2.7?
Version 2.7 introduced an updated anti-popcorn device with a convex blocker. Earlier versions used a flat blocker that could allow a few beans to remain on top rather than feeding smoothly into the grinding chamber.
Is this the 120V US version?
Yes. This product page is for the 110–120V model designed for use in the United States. It has the correct plug and electrical frequency for standard US household outlets.
The international 220V DF64 Gen 2.7 is sold separately and should not be used with a standard US outlet.
