Turin DF54 v4.1 Single-Dose Espresso Grinder

The Turin DF54 v4.1 is a compact single-dose coffee grinder built around 54mm flat burrs, stepless adjustment and a low-retention workflow. It provides the precise grind control required for espresso while offering enough range for pour-over, drip coffee, AeroPress, French press and cold brew.

The DF54 brings many of the practical features associated with larger Turin flat-burr grinders into a smaller and more affordable platform. Its aluminum body, plasma anti-static system, anti-popcorn device, bellows and 58mm dosing cup make it especially well suited to home espresso users who want flat-burr performance without the price or countertop footprint of a 64mm grinder.

This product is the 100–120V, 60Hz US version and includes a one-year Espresso Outlet warranty.

Why Choose the Turin DF54?

Precise stepless espresso adjustment

The stepless adjustment collar provides an effectively unlimited number of settings between marked positions. This lets users make very small grind-size changes when dialing in espresso instead of being restricted to preset steps.

Compact 54mm flat-burr platform

The DF54’s 54mm flat burrs provide a consistent grind while keeping the grinder compact and affordable. It is a strong option for buyers who want a flat-burr flavor presentation but do not need the larger burr platform or extensive aftermarket selection of the DF64.

Low-retention single-dose workflow

The tilted grinding chamber, short exit path and bellows are designed to minimize retained coffee. Under favorable conditions, retention can be below 0.1g, although the exact amount varies with coffee, grind setting, static, cleaning and user technique. The DF54 should be considered a low-retention grinder rather than a zero-retention grinder.

Plasma anti-static system

An ion generator near the exit chute helps reduce static electricity and grounds clinging. Static can still vary with humidity, roast level and coffee, so light RDT may be useful during dry conditions. Keeping the probes and chute clean is important for consistent performance.

Updated metal declumper and larger chute

Version 4.1 uses a metal declumper and a larger exit chute to improve grounds flow and make the chute easier to maintain. These changes address two of the most important service and workflow areas in earlier DF54 production.

Small countertop footprint

At approximately 4.5 inches wide and 12 inches high, the DF54 fits comfortably beneath most kitchen cabinets and takes up considerably less counter space than many full-size flat-burr grinders.

Available Colors and Package Contents

The DF54 is offered in black, white, silver, red, blue and grey. Availability varies by color, burr selection and whether an in-stock or preorder configuration is selected.

The current package includes:

  • Turin DF54 v4.1 grinder
  • Factory-installed 54mm Turin burrs selected with the order
  • Bellows and wooden lid
  • 58mm transparent dosing cup
  • Adjustable dosing-cup and portafilter support
  • Power cord for standard US electrical outlets

Package contents can occasionally change during production. Use the current product photographs and notices to confirm what is included.

What Changed in DF54 v4.1?

The core DF54 design remains a compact 54mm flat-burr grinder with a 150W motor, stepless adjustment, bellows and plasma anti-static system. The most meaningful recent changes concern the declumper and exit chute.

Version Meaningful differences
Original DF54 Introduced the compact 54mm flat-burr platform, stepless adjustment, low-retention bellows workflow and plasma anti-static system.
Later revisions Received incremental production updates while retaining the same core motor, burr size and overall grinder design.
DF54 v4.1 Adds the updated metal declumper and larger exit chute for improved grounds flow, durability and easier chute maintenance.

Which DF54 Burrs Should I Choose?

The correct burr option depends primarily on whether you prioritize espresso body and versatility or filter-coffee clarity.

Burr Best suited for Cup profile
Stainless Steel Espresso Espresso and general use Balanced body, sweetness and clarity
Red Titanium Espresso Espresso and general use Similar espresso-oriented geometry with a coated surface
Stainless Steel Brew Pour-over and filter coffee Greater clarity and flavor separation

Stainless Steel Espresso burrs

Choose the Stainless Steel Espresso burrs for the best-value general-purpose configuration. They are designed primarily for espresso but can also produce good results across common filter methods.

Red Titanium Espresso burrs

The Red Titanium Espresso burrs use a similar espresso-oriented geometry with a coated surface. Choose them if you prefer the coated burr option while retaining a balanced espresso-focused cup profile.

Stainless Steel Brew burrs

Choose the Stainless Steel Brew burrs if pour-over and filter coffee are your priority. Their brew-oriented profile emphasizes clarity and flavor separation. They can grind finely, but the Espresso burrs are generally the better choice for customers whose main use is espresso.

DF54 vs. DF64 Gen 2.7 vs. DF64V

The DF54, DF64 Gen 2.7 and DF64V are all stepless single-dose grinders capable of espresso and filter grinding. Their principal differences are burr size, motor, speed control, size, price and aftermarket burr selection.

Feature DF54 v4.1 DF64 Gen 2.7 DF64V
Burr size 54mm flat burrs 64mm flat burrs 64mm flat burrs
Motor 150W AC 250W AC 300W brushless DC
Speed control Fixed speed Fixed speed Variable speed
Adjustment Stepless Stepless Stepless
Plasma anti-static system Yes Yes Yes
Aftermarket burr selection More limited 54mm selection Extensive 64mm selection, including SSP Extensive 64mm selection, including SSP
Best for Compact, affordable flat-burr performance Versatility and future burr upgrades Variable-speed experimentation and premium motor design
Primary consideration Slower grinding and fewer burr upgrades Larger and more expensive than the DF54 Highest price of the three

Which grinder should you choose?

Choose the DF54 if you want the most compact and affordable Turin flat-burr grinder and do not expect to experiment extensively with aftermarket burrs.

Choose the DF64 Gen 2.7 if you want faster grinding, a more powerful motor and access to the broad 64mm aftermarket burr ecosystem.

Choose the DF64V if you want a brushless motor and adjustable RPM for greater control over grinding speed and workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Turin DF54 good for espresso?

Yes. The DF54’s stepless adjustment and espresso-oriented 54mm flat burr options provide the fine control needed to dial in espresso. It is particularly attractive to home baristas seeking flat-burr performance at a lower price and in a smaller footprint.

Can the DF54 grind for pour-over and filter coffee?

Yes. The adjustment range covers pour-over, drip coffee, AeroPress, French press and cold brew. Customers who primarily prepare filter coffee should consider the Stainless Steel Brew burrs for greater clarity and flavor separation.

What is the difference between DF54 Espresso and Brew burrs?

The Espresso burrs are intended to provide a balanced combination of body, sweetness and clarity at fine grind settings. The Brew burrs prioritize clarity and separation for pour-over and other filter methods. Choose based on the brewing method you use most often.

What is the difference between Stainless Steel and Red Titanium Espresso burrs?

Both are espresso-oriented choices with a similar general-purpose profile. Red Titanium is the coated option, while Stainless Steel is the more economical standard option.

How much coffee does the DF54 retain?

The DF54 is designed for very low retention and can retain less than 0.1g under favorable conditions. Actual retention depends on the coffee, grind setting, static, chute cleanliness and bellows technique. Some exchange between old and new grounds can occur in any grinder.

Does the DF54 require RDT?

Not always. The plasma ion generator reduces static, but a very light mist can still improve the workflow with extremely dry coffee or during low-humidity weather. Avoid excessive moisture. Learn more in the Espresso Outlet RDT guide.

How do I keep the plasma anti-static system working properly?

Coffee dust can accumulate on the ion-generator probes and reduce their effectiveness. Periodically inspect and gently clean the chute and probes while the grinder is unplugged. Never introduce water into the chute, grinding chamber, motor or electrical components.

Should I hot-start the DF54?

Hot-starting means switching on the grinder before adding the beans. It can improve feeding consistency and reduce the chance of stalling when grinding dense, lightly roasted coffee at a fine espresso setting. Always make grind adjustments while the motor is running.

Can the DF54 grind directly into a portafilter?

Yes. The adjustable support can accommodate many portafilters, and the included 58mm dosing cup is designed to transfer grounds cleanly into a standard 58mm basket. The dosing cup is usually the most consistent option when a portafilter does not sit securely beneath the chute.

Does the DF54 need burr alignment?

Most customers should use the grinder normally before considering alignment. Factory alignment is generally sufficient for typical home espresso and filter use. Espresso Outlet does not perform custom burr alignment as part of the standard purchase.

Can 64mm SSP burrs be installed in the DF54?

No. The common 64mm SSP burr sets used in DF64 grinders are too large for the DF54. The DF54 requires compatible 54mm burrs, and its aftermarket selection is more limited than the 64mm platform.

How often should the DF54 be cleaned?

Cleaning frequency depends on usage, roast level and coffee oil. Inspect the chute when static or retention increases, grounds begin clumping, or output becomes inconsistent. Always unplug the grinder and use a dry brush or grinder-safe vacuum; do not place water inside the grinder.

Is the DF54 noisy?

The DF54 uses a 150W AC motor and is not silent, but it processes a typical home dose relatively quickly. Sound varies with roast level, grind setting and whether beans are loaded before or after the motor starts.

What changed in DF54 v4.1?

The principal v4.1 updates are the metal declumper and larger exit chute. The core 54mm burr platform, stepless adjustment, 150W motor and compact body remain consistent with the established DF54 design.

What comes with the DF54?

The current package includes the DF54 grinder, the selected factory-installed Turin burrs, bellows and lid, transparent 58mm dosing cup, adjustable cup and portafilter support, and a US power cord.

Is this the 120V US version?

Yes. This listing is for the 100–120V, 60Hz model intended for standard US household outlets. International customers can purchase the 220V DF54 from Turin Grinders.

DF54 vs. DF64: which should I buy?

The DF54 is the better choice when compact size and lower price are the priorities. The DF64 Gen 2.7 is the better choice when you want a more powerful motor, faster grinding and broad access to 64mm aftermarket burrs.

DF54 vs. Baratza Encore ESP: what is the difference?

The DF54 uses flat burrs, stepless adjustment and a single-dose bellows workflow. The Encore ESP uses conical burrs, stepped adjustment and a more conventional hopper-style design. The DF54 generally appeals to users who want finer adjustment control and a flat-burr flavor presentation.

DF54 vs. Fellow Opus: what is the difference?

The DF54 uses 54mm flat burrs and an external stepless adjustment collar. The Fellow Opus uses conical burrs and a stepped adjustment system with an additional internal adjustment. The DF54 offers a more direct espresso-dialing workflow, while the preferred flavor profile depends on the user.
