Zerno Coffee Grinders: Z1, Z2, History & Alternatives

Zerno currently makes two grinders: the 64 mm Z1 and 80 mm Z2. Both are single-dose platforms assembled in Chicago, but the Z2 is not simply a larger Z1. It uses a different motor, speed range, grind range, alignment target and grind-chamber design.

Zerno history and the Z1

Zerno publicly introduced the Z1 in 2022 and built it through small production batches. The company documents revisions on a version-history page; those revisions are not separate grinder models. Z1 V2.3 covers late-2025/2026 production, while earlier used units may contain different chutes, prebreakers or service parts.

The Z1’s auger/prebreaker controls how beans enter the burrs. Its fixed 900 rpm removes speed as a user variable. Zerno specifies alignment below 25 microns and offers both standard three-bolt burrs and Zerno’s three-pin blind mounting format. “Blind” does not mean universally compatible: Zerno’s FAQ states that its blind-burr mounting is proprietary.

What changes with the Z2

The Z2 moves to 80 mm burrs, a direct-drive servo motor and a 200–2,000 rpm range. Zerno specifies alignment tolerance below 15 microns on the product page and describes holding critical components to ten microns or less in its manufacturing article. Those are manufacturer tolerances, not independent performance measurements.

Current listed burr choices include Zerno Core, SSP Ultra Low Fines, SSP Lab Sweet, SSP Brew and SSP Low Uniformity. The intended use differs: Core is espresso-oriented; ULF and Brew are filter-focused; Lab Sweet spans espresso and filter; Low Uniformity is presented as a balanced pour-over option. Buyers should select the burr geometry with the order rather than treating every Z2 as identical.

Ordering, lead time and included parts

Zerno’s current FAQ lists a 30–60 day Z1 lead time and approximately 4.5 months for Z2, updated weekly. Standard Z1 equipment includes the medium-feed auger, wood accent, burr selection, single-piece chute, dosing cup and magnetic burr tools. Z2 includes a variable-speed slow-feed auger, stainless knocker chute, wood accent, dosing cup and magnetic burr tools. Lead times and included items should be rechecked before purchase.

The Turin DF64V provides 64 mm burr compatibility plus variable speed, unlike Z1’s fixed speed. The DF64 Gen 2 is the lower-cost 64 mm comparison. The DF83V is the closest stocked comparison to Z2’s large-burr, variable-speed concept, though its 83 mm mounting system and internal design are different.

Zerno FAQ

Can Z1 and Z2 use the same burrs?

No. Z1 is 64 mm and Z2 is 80 mm.

Will Zerno’s blind burrs fit other grinders?

Do not assume so. Zerno describes its blind-burr format as proprietary.

Does changing a burr set require realignment?

Zerno designs both platforms to preserve alignment during burr changes, but the burr format and installation procedure must match the grinder.
