What Is Amperage? Electrical Requirements
Amperage is electrical current, measured in amperes or amps (A). For espresso machines, grinders, brewers and roasters, amperage helps determine whether a branch circuit, plug and receptacle can safely support the equipment.
High-power coffee equipment—especially machines with large electric heating elements—can draw much more current than typical countertop appliances. Electrical requirements should be confirmed from the equipment nameplate and installation manual before the machine arrives.
Amps, volts and watts
Voltage is electrical potential, amperage is current, and wattage is power. For a simple resistive load such as a heating element, the relationship is approximately:
Watts = Volts × Amps
So a 1,800-watt appliance operating at 120 volts draws about 15 amps under that simplified calculation. Real machines can contain motors, pumps, electronics and multiple heaters, so use the manufacturer's rated current rather than calculating circuit requirements from advertised wattage alone.
Why 240V equipment can draw fewer amps for the same power
For the same power output, higher voltage requires less current. A 4,800-watt heater would draw about 40 amps at 120V but about 20 amps at 240V. That is one reason higher-output commercial espresso machines commonly use 208–240V service.

These examples illustrate the basic relationship only; they are not circuit-sizing instructions.
Nameplate current matters
The equipment data plate should identify rated voltage, frequency, current or power, and often phase. Do not assume that two machines with similar boiler sizes use the same circuit. Manufacturers may stage heating elements, use different element wattages or configure models for different markets.
Dedicated circuits and continuous loads
Many espresso machines require a dedicated circuit so other appliances do not share the available capacity. Electrical codes can also require branch circuits to be sized above the normal operating current for certain loads or duty cycles. The applicable rules depend on equipment listing, installation type and local code.
A breaker rating is not a target operating current. Repeated nuisance trips may indicate an overloaded circuit, a failing appliance, an incorrect installation or a protection-device issue—not something to solve by simply installing a larger breaker.
Plug type does not tell the whole story
North American plugs may follow NEMA configurations such as 5-15, 5-20, 6-20 or locking styles. A plug identifies a particular voltage/current configuration, but installation still needs the correct conductor size, breaker, receptacle and grounding. Never replace a plug merely to fit an existing outlet without confirming equipment requirements.
Grinders and brewers
Commercial grinders usually draw much less continuous power than espresso-machine heaters, but motors can have startup current and duty-cycle requirements. High-capacity batch brewers and hot-water towers can also have substantial heating loads.
Planning a café installation
Before construction or cabinetry is complete, provide an electrician with the exact equipment model and manufacturer electrical specifications. Confirm voltage, phase, frequency, amperage, plug/receptacle type, dedicated-circuit requirements and GFCI requirements where applicable.
