What Is a Brew Grinder? Filter Coffee
A brew grinder is a coffee grinder designed primarily for filter and immersion methods such as pour-over, batch brew, French press, AeroPress, and cold brew. The term does not mean the grinder is physically incapable of espresso; it means its burr geometry, adjustment range, workflow, and particle distribution are optimized around coarser brewing.
For specialty filter coffee, the goal is often high clarity, controlled fines, repeatable adjustment, and fast, clean workflow.
What makes a grinder brew focused?
- Burr geometry: often designed to produce a relatively clean main particle population and limit excessive fines at filter settings.
- Adjustment range: useful spacing from fine AeroPress or small pour-over through coarse immersion and cold-brew settings.
- Low retention: helpful when switching coffees frequently, especially in home or sample-roasting workflows.

Why fines matter in filter coffee
Very small particles extract quickly and can migrate toward paper-filter pores, slowing drawdown. Excess fines can make a pour-over stall even when the average grind size looks coarse. That can produce a brew that is simultaneously slow, uneven, and astringent.

Do larger burrs make a better brew grinder?
Not automatically. Larger burr diameter can support different geometry and greater throughput, but burr design, alignment, motor behavior, feed rate, and manufacturing quality matter at least as much as nominal size. A well-designed smaller burr can outperform a poorly suited larger one for a particular brew style.
Home vs. commercial brew grinders
A home grinder may prioritize compact size, low retention, and single-dosing convenience. A commercial café grinder may need much higher duty cycle, a large hopper, fast bulk grinding, easy bag clamping, and repeatable numbered settings for multiple batch recipes.

Can you use an espresso grinder for pour-over?
