Why Is There Water in My Espresso Machine Drip Tray?
Water in an espresso machine drip tray is usually normal. The tray does more than catch spills: many machines intentionally route pressure relief, valve discharge, and rinse water into it. The amount and timing tell you whether the machine is operating as designed.
Normal sources of drip-tray water
Three-way solenoid discharge

Expansion or over-pressure valve
Heating water expands. Depending on the machine, an expansion valve may release small amounts as the boiler warms. An over-pressure valve can also return or discharge water when pump pressure exceeds its setting. Occasional drips tied to heating or pumping can be expected.
Vacuum-breaker drain
Steam boilers use a vacuum breaker to release air during warm-up. Some machines route its brief moisture discharge to the drip tray. This should stop after the valve seals and normal pressure develops.
Rinsing and workflow
Group flushes, steam-wand purges, cup drips, and water running from the portafilter all add up quickly. Measure the unexplained water only after accounting for your own routine.
How to tell whether the amount is abnormal
- Empty and dry the tray.
- Fill and seat the reservoir, or confirm the plumbed supply.
- Warm the machine without brewing and observe the tray.

Coffee-colored water immediately after a shot normally comes from the brew-group discharge.
