Turin SK40 vs Mahlkönig X54

The Turin SK40 is a compact conical-burr grinder for weighed single doses. The Mahlkönig X54 is a flat-burr home allrounder with hopper feeding and timed presets. Both offer stepless adjustment, but the controls and daily handling are different.

Espresso adjustment
The SK40 turns its grind collar through a worm-drive knob. That slow movement is useful when a small change improves espresso flow. The X54’s display manages dosing functions; it does not electronically choose grind size in place of the manual adjustment. On either grinder, hold dose and yield steady while dialing in.
Switching coffee and brew methods
The SK40 makes it straightforward to weigh regular coffee for one drink and decaf for the next. Changing from espresso to a much coarser setting takes several turns, so it is most convenient when you stay near one brew range. The X54’s removable front arrangements support brewing into a portafilter or a container. A larger hopper is convenient for repeated use of one coffee, but switching beans requires managing what remains in the hopper and grind path.
A timer still needs a scale
Timed dispensing saves a step, but the weight delivered changes with the coffee and setting. Check the X54’s output after an adjustment and periodically during use. With the SK40, compare beans in and grounds out to check the clearing routine. Neither measurement should be replaced by an assumption of zero retention.
Counter space and cleaning
The SK40 has a narrow footprint, although its bellows require access above the hopper. With the X54, allow space for the selected front and collection container as well as filling access. Inspect the supplied cleaning instructions before purchase; ease of removing coffee buildup matters more over time than a bare list of materials.
Which should you choose?
Choose the SK40 for a compact, simple espresso routine with frequent bean changes. Choose the X54 for hopper convenience and its allround home layout.
