Turin SD40S vs Lelit Fred PL044MMT
Updated September 9, 2026.
The legacy Turin SD40S emphasizes weighed single doses, while the Lelit Fred PL044MMT combines a hopper with timed grinding. Both can belong in a home coffee setup, but the original comparison overstated the SD40S’s advantages and mixed grinder controls with espresso-machine features.

Understand the SD40S mechanism
The original SD40S specification describes an aluminum body, bellows and a magnetically located 58mm-format metal cup. Its collar is different from the side worm-drive mechanism of the SK40. Do not use the model names interchangeably. If buying an older unit, verify the actual adjustment and included accessories with the seller.
What the Fred adds
Lelit documents stepless micrometric adjustment and electronic dose regulation for the PL044MMT. The timer manages how long the grinder runs; it is not a PID temperature display. A hopper-and-timer arrangement is a practical benefit for a household making repeated drinks from one coffee, rather than an unnecessary feature merely because a single-dose grinder costs less.
A realistic espresso comparison
Use a suitable basket dose and a measured yield, then dial the grind on each machine. The Fred’s fine control should not be discounted because it is hopper-fed. The SD40S’s smaller bean load can make coffee changes convenient, but low retention still depends on the grounds path and cleaning. Neither grinder guarantees a particular flavor simply from burr diameter.
What you will do every morning
With the SD40S, weigh beans, grind into the cup and clear loose grounds consistently. With the Fred, verify the timed dose in the basket and adjust the timer after a grind or coffee change. If changing to decaf, account for beans and grounds remaining in a hopper-fed system. The more appealing routine depends on how frequently you switch coffee.
Maintenance and a current alternative
Unplug before accessing burrs or the chute and follow the correct cleaning procedure. When buying used, inspect smooth adjustment, normal output and availability of model-specific parts. The SD40S is not currently an active Espresso Outlet offering. The SK40 is the closer current Turin option for conical single dosing; our SK40 versus Fred comparison explains that pairing directly.
Choose on workflow and support rather than an old price difference. A functioning grinder that already meets your recipe needs does not require replacement simply because another has a newer model name.
