Three-Phase Power for Commercial Espresso Machines: Voltage, Load, and Installation Planning

Three-phase power is an alternating-current electrical system using three voltage phases separated in time. It is common in commercial buildings and can be used by high-power espresso machines, brewers, roasters, and other food-service equipment to distribute large electrical loads efficiently.

Why coffee equipment may use three phase

Large commercial espresso machines can contain several kilowatts of heating capacity. Multiple brew boilers, a large steam boiler, cup heaters, and other loads may operate at the same time. Three-phase service can supply substantial power while distributing current across multiple conductors.

Three phase is not a voltage

Phase and voltage are separate specifications. Commercial buildings may provide different line-to-line and line-to-neutral voltages depending on the electrical system. The equipment nameplate and manufacturer installation document must be matched to the actual supply.

Single-phase vs. three-phase equipment

Some commercial machines are available in multiple wiring configurations, while others are built for one specific supply. A machine should never be assumed convertible just because another version of the same model supports a different phase arrangement.

Planning the café
