Single-Phase Power for Espresso Machines: Voltage, Amperage, and Commercial Equipment Planning

Single-phase power is an alternating-current electrical supply using one voltage phase and is the normal form of power found in North American homes and many cafés. Espresso machines can be designed for 120 V or higher-voltage single-phase circuits, while some large commercial equipment may also be offered in three-phase configurations.

Single phase does not mean one voltage

In North America, equipment may use nominal 120 V or 208–240 V single-phase service depending on heater load and design. The machine nameplate and installation documentation—not the plug's appearance alone—should determine the required supply.

Why commercial machines use higher voltage

Heating water quickly requires substantial electrical power. A larger multi-group machine may use several kilowatts of heating capacity. Higher-voltage circuits can deliver that power with lower current than an equivalent 120 V load.

Single phase vs. three phase

Three-phase power uses three alternating phases and is common in larger commercial buildings and high-power equipment. A machine wired for one configuration should not be assumed convertible to another unless the manufacturer specifically provides an approved wiring configuration.

What to verify before buying

  • Required voltage and frequency
  • Maximum current or rated wattage
  • Plug/receptacle or hard-wire requirement
  • Dedicated-circuit requirement
  • Whether the listed model is single or three phase

Electrical work should be performed to the equipment instructions and applicable code by a qualified electrician. Do not select a larger breaker merely because a machine trips an undersized or incorrect circuit.
