Flushing an Espresso Group: Cleaning, Temperature Management, and Good Workflow
Flushing the group means running brew water through an espresso-machine grouphead without a prepared portafilter locked in. Baristas may flush to clear loose grounds, rinse the shower screen, stabilize temperature on certain machines, or verify normal water flow.
The most common reason: rinse loose coffee
After knocking out a puck, small grounds can remain on the shower screen, dispersion area, or group gasket. A brief water flush before the next shot helps remove this loose material. It does not replace proper backflushing or scheduled cleaning detergent.
Temperature-management flushing
On some heat-exchanger machines, water sitting in the heat exchanger can become hotter than the desired brew condition during idle time. A cooling flush replaces overheated water and changes the thermal state of the group before brewing. The needed volume depends on machine design, idle duration, boiler pressure, group temperature, and workflow.
Modern machines with tightly controlled groups may need little or no temperature-management flush. Automatically dumping a large amount of water before every shot can waste water and may cool a system that was already stable.
Flush, water backflush, and detergent backflush are different
| Action | Portafilter/basket | Main purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Group flush | No blind basket | Rinse group or manage temperature |
| Water backflush | Blind basket | Reverse-flow rinse on compatible machines |
| Detergent backflush | Blind basket + cleaner | Remove coffee oils from compatible valve/group circuits |

Use the machine's behavior as the guide
If a group sprays unevenly, has visibly dirty water, or shows reduced flow, a simple flush may reveal a problem but may not fix it. A clogged shower screen, scale, restricted jet, weak water supply, or valve problem can require maintenance.
At home, build a short flush into puck-cleanup workflow if it keeps the group clean. In a café, keep it efficient so repeated flushing does not waste large amounts of treated and heated water.
