Espresso Machine Thermosiphons
A thermosiphon is a natural-circulation loop that moves hot water through parts of an espresso machine without requiring a separate circulation pump. It is especially associated with E61 and other heavy group designs, where the loop transfers heat from the boiler or heat exchanger to the grouphead.
How thermosiphon circulation works
Hotter water is less dense and tends to rise, while cooler water is denser and tends to fall. A properly arranged hydraulic loop takes advantage of that density difference. Hot water travels toward the group, gives up heat to the metal mass, cools somewhat, and returns toward the heat source.
Why the group needs circulation
An E61 group contains a large amount of brass and is exposed to room air. Without continuing heat input, that metal would cool. Thermosiphon circulation keeps the group warm between shots so brew water does not lose excessive heat as it travels to the puck.
What controls thermosiphon temperature?
- Boiler or heat-exchanger temperature
- Thermosiphon tube diameter and routing
- Restrictors or jets in the loop
- Grouphead mass and exposure
- Idle time and shot frequency
- Scale or other restrictions
This is why two E61 machines can have different idle and flushing behavior even though the groupheads look similar.
Heat-exchanger machines vs. dual boilers
On a traditional HX machine, the thermosiphon often interacts closely with the heat exchanger and steam-boiler operating temperature. On a dual-boiler E61 machine, the brew boiler supplies the group loop more directly. Both can use natural circulation, but their temperature-management behavior can differ.
Thermosiphon is not the same as brew flow
The circulation that keeps the group hot occurs while the machine is idle. When a shot starts, brew water follows the machine’s active brew path to the puck. The thermosiphon’s job is primarily thermal management.
