Espresso Machine Dispersion Plates: Water Distribution Above the Puck
A dispersion plate is a component above an espresso machine's shower screen that helps spread incoming brew water across the group before it reaches the coffee puck. Depending on the machine, it may also be called a diffuser, dispersion block, or water-distribution plate.
Where the dispersion plate sits
Water leaving the brew circuit enters the group through one or more passages. If that stream hit the puck directly, water could concentrate in one area. The dispersion assembly creates a wider, lower-velocity distribution before water passes through the shower screen.
Dispersion plate vs shower screen
The two components work together but are not the same. The dispersion plate sits upstream and distributes the incoming flow more broadly. The shower screen is the final perforated layer visible at the bottom of the group and helps spread water across the basket while keeping coffee grounds out of the group.
Why distribution matters
Espresso pucks are highly sensitive to localized flow. Uneven water delivery can contribute to preferential flow paths, although puck preparation, grind, basket geometry, dose, headspace, and coffee condition are usually equally or more important.

Scale and coffee residue can affect the assembly
Mineral deposits or coffee oils can partially block holes and passages, changing water distribution. Cleaning requirements depend on the group design. Some dispersion plates are easily removable during routine group service; others should only be accessed according to the manufacturer's instructions.
Aftermarket dispersion parts
Changing a dispersion plate or screen can alter free-flow water debit and the way water reaches the puck. An aftermarket part is not automatically an upgrade. The original group components are normally designed as a system, so evaluate changes by repeatable extraction and taste rather than visual appearance alone.
