Espresso Dosing Cups: Cleaner Transfers, Better Workflow, and What Size to Choose

An espresso dosing cup is a small container used to catch ground coffee from a grinder and transfer it into a portafilter or brewer. It looks simple, but the right cup can make a single-dose workflow cleaner, reduce spills, and make distribution more repeatable.

Why baristas use dosing cups

Many single-dose coffee grinders are designed to grind into a cup rather than directly into a portafilter. The cup contains grounds that may exit the chute with static or at slightly different angles, then lets the barista weigh, inspect, shake, or transfer the dose before puck preparation.

Fit matters more than appearance

For espresso, the most convenient dosing cups are sized so the rim fits into or closely over the filter basket. A cup that matches common 58 mm baskets can be inverted over the portafilter with minimal gap, reducing coffee loss during the flip. Smaller basket systems may need a narrower cup or a funnel-assisted transfer.

Capacity matters too. A cup should hold the full dose without grounds piling above the rim. This is particularly important with darker roasts, which are less dense and occupy more volume for the same gram weight.

Static, coatings, and material

Metal cups are durable and usually easy to tap clean. Plastic cups can be lighter, but some plastics may hold more static depending on humidity and grinder behavior. A cup does not eliminate static by itself; grinder design, ionizers, humidity, roast level, and techniques such as RDT all influence how much coffee clings to the walls.

Dosing cup vs grinding directly into the portafilter

Direct-to-portafilter grinding is faster in a busy hopper-fed workflow. A dosing cup adds one transfer step, but it makes it easier to weigh the grinder's actual output and can keep grounds from spraying outside the basket. Neither approach is inherently better—the right choice depends on whether speed or measurement flexibility is the priority.

Best practice

Keep the cup dry and free of old coffee oils. After grinding, place the portafilter over the cup, invert them together, then give a gentle tap before lifting the cup. Avoid aggressive shaking after transfer if it creates an uneven mound. From there, distribute and tamp normally.
