Cold Brew Concentrate: Ratios, Dilution, and Strength Explained

Cold brew concentrate is a deliberately strong cold-extracted coffee that is normally diluted before drinking. Instead of brewing directly to serving strength, the brewer uses a relatively high coffee dose for the amount of water, then combines the finished concentrate with water, milk, or ice when serving.

Concentrate vs. ready-to-drink cold brew

The difference is primarily strength and intended use. A ready-to-drink recipe is brewed close to the concentration you want in the cup. A concentrate is stronger so it can be stored in less volume and adjusted at service.

Cold brew recipes vary widely, but concentrate recipes often use coffee-to-water ratios in the neighborhood of 1:4 to 1:8 by weight, while ready-to-drink cold brew commonly uses substantially more water. Those are starting ranges rather than universal standards. Grinder, roast, steep time, temperature, filtration, and the desired final beverage all matter.

How dilution works

The easiest way to use concentrate consistently is to measure the concentrate and diluent by weight or volume. A 1:1 dilution means equal parts concentrate and water. A stronger concentrate may need two or more parts water for each part concentrate, while a lighter concentrate may need much less dilution.

Do not assume the same dilution works for every batch. Taste the concentrate first, then adjust the finished drink. Milk, ice melt, syrups, and other ingredients also change final strength.

Does concentrate always have more caffeine?

Per ounce, concentrate can contain more dissolved coffee material and caffeine than a ready-to-drink cold brew. But caffeine per serving depends on the coffee dose used, extraction, dilution, and serving size. A heavily diluted concentrate can deliver less caffeine than a large ready-to-drink cold brew made with a high coffee dose.

Grind, steep time, and filtration

Cold brew is often made with a medium-coarse to coarse grind because long contact times allow substantial extraction. Grinding extremely coarse can produce weak, hollow concentrate; grinding too fine can create heavy sediment and difficult filtration. The correct setting is the one that gives the target flavor and extraction in your specific brewer.

Storage

Keep finished cold brew concentrate refrigerated in a clean, covered container. Flavor changes over time even under refrigeration, so smaller batches are often preferable when freshness matters. Good sanitation is especially important in café or commercial production.
