Coffee Grinder Clumping
Clumping is ground coffee sticking together in small aggregates as it exits a grinder. It is common in espresso-range grinding because the particles are fine, the surface area is high, and static, oils, humidity, and chute pressure can make grounds adhere to one another.
Clumps are not automatically proof that a grinder is poor. What matters is whether they create uneven dosing or density in the espresso puck and whether the workflow can break them up consistently.
Why coffee grounds clump

Does clumping cause channeling?
Clumps can contribute to uneven puck density if they remain intact when the basket is tamped. Dense clumps next to looser areas can create different local resistance to water. However, visible clumps are only one part of puck preparation. Distribution, dose, basket fill, tamp level, grinder particle distribution, and puck integrity all matter.
A simple distribution routine can usually break ordinary clumps before tamping. Thin-needle WDT is popular because it can deaggregate grounds and distribute them throughout the basket.
RDT and static-related clumping
The Ross Droplet Technique (RDT) adds a very small amount of water to whole beans before grinding to reduce static. On compatible grinders, it can reduce spray and make grounds more manageable. Too much water can create other problems, and RDT should not be used where the grinder manufacturer advises against it.

When cleaning matters
If a grinder that previously produced loose grounds suddenly begins delivering sticky compressed clumps, inspect the chute, declumper, and anti-static system. Coffee oils and fines can accumulate and narrow the exit path, changing how grounds are compressed.
Unplug the grinder before accessing the chute or burr area. A clogged or dirty chute can look like a grind-quality problem when the actual issue is maintenance.
Should you judge a grinder by fluffy grounds?
Fluffy-looking grounds are pleasant to work with, but appearance alone does not measure particle-size distribution or cup quality. A grinder can produce visually fluffy coffee and still create a lot of fines; another can produce small clumps that disappear with distribution and make excellent espresso.
Practical ways to reduce clumping
- Keep the chute and declumper clean.
- Use WDT or another repeatable distribution method for espresso.
- Consider a carefully controlled RDT routine on compatible single-dose grinders.
- Avoid exposing the grinder to steam and excessive humidity.
- Use fresh coffee without extremely oily surface buildup when practical.
- Do not make grinder adjustments solely based on how fluffy the grounds look—taste the espresso.
