Compatibility note: Water treatment must be selected from an actual water test and expected daily usage. This standard-capacity system is not automatically correct for every site or every espresso machine.

Scale and Chlorine Reduction for Commercial Espresso Equipment

The Nuova Simonelli standard-capacity filtration system combines the NUOVART005 head with the NUOVART006 RSCF195 cartridge. It is designed for coffee and espresso applications that need hardness reduction plus improved taste and odor. Treating water correctly can reduce hard-scale formation on heating surfaces, support energy efficiency and help avoid preventable downtime.

The RSCF195 is rated at 4,350 grains of softening capacity. Capacity is not the same as a fixed replacement interval: harder water consumes the cartridge faster, and a busy café uses more treated water than a low-volume restaurant. Use measured hardness and estimated gallons per day to create a replacement schedule, then confirm performance with periodic testing.

What Is Included?

  • NUOVART005 filter head
  • NUOVART006 RSCF195 replacement cartridge
  • Valve-in-head design that shuts off and vents water during cartridge changes
  • Carbon treatment for chlorine taste and odor reduction
  • Ion-exchange treatment for reduction of calcium and magnesium hardness

How to Size the System

Start with total hardness in grains per gallon (gpg) or parts per million as CaCO3. Convert if necessary using approximately 17.1 ppm per grain. Divide the cartridge's 4,350-grain rating by the measured grains per gallon to estimate theoretical gallons of hardness capacity. Apply a conservative service factor, account for all connected equipment, and replace before hardness breakthrough.

Example: at 10 gpg, the theoretical hardness capacity is about 435 gallons. Actual life varies with water chemistry, flow, temperature, usage and treatment goals. A qualified water-treatment or espresso technician should approve the final system and replacement interval.

Installation Guidance

  • Install on a cold-water line in the direction indicated on the head.
  • Provide an accessible upstream shutoff and follow local plumbing code.
  • Mount vertically with enough clearance to remove the cartridge.
  • Flush a new cartridge according to the manufacturer's instructions before connecting equipment.
  • Do not exceed rated pressure, temperature or service flow.
  • Record the installation date, meter reading and test results.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does this system make any water safe for an espresso machine?

No. It targets specific hardness and taste/odor issues. Very hard water, high chlorides, unusual alkalinity, sediment or other contaminants may require a different or multi-stage treatment design.

How often should the RSCF195 cartridge be changed?

Base the interval on measured hardness and usage, not the calendar alone. Replace at rated capacity, when test results show hardness breakthrough, or at the manufacturer's sanitary maximum interval—whichever comes first.

Will it remove all minerals?

No. It is not reverse osmosis or deionization. Some mineral content remains, which can be desirable for flavor and machine sensing when it falls within the equipment maker's specification.

Can one cartridge feed multiple machines?

Only if the combined peak flow and total daily consumption stay within the system design. Undersizing creates pressure drop and short cartridge life.

What should be tested before purchase?

At minimum, test total hardness, alkalinity, pH and chlorine; chlorides and total dissolved solids may also matter for the connected equipment. Read our water-hardness guide and consult a qualified technician.

Note about water hardness

Using hard water will ruin your espresso machine. Soft water no higher than 50ppm is required to keep your espresso machine running for the long term. Using hard water will void the warranty.

Great Service! It has been a few months since I purchased my machine, but I absolutely love it. Initially I had some issues with damage from shipping, but Joe took care of it immediately so there were no problems. He also stayed on the phone with me for a long time the day I received my machine so I could get everything working properly. I highly recommend!
