Apple and cocoa from Costa Rica

Boonton Costa Rica Tarrazú La Pastora is a roasted coffee described by the roaster as smooth and sweet, with apple and cocoa notes. The apple character gives customers a fruit reference, while cocoa supplies a contrasting flavor impression. It is a useful choice when you want a coffee with both fruit and familiar cocoa character, without selecting an added-flavor coffee.

Boonton Coffee is a small-batch roaster and coffee shop in Boonton, New Jersey. The agricultural origin of this selection is Costa Rica, identified in the product name as Tarrazú La Pastora.

The supplier description does not give a roast level, cultivar, processing method or numerical elevation. La Pastora is retained as the listing’s coffee identity, without adding a farm or cooperative attribution that is not documented. Your selected grind size is a preparation option, not a roast description.

Build a filter-coffee reference

Begin with 20 grams of coffee and 320 grams of water for a single pour-over. A medium grind and water around 200°F provide a neutral starting point. Rinse the paper filter, discard that rinse water, add the grounds and gently level the bed. Saturate with about 60 grams of water and allow a 30–45-second bloom before completing the pour.

Keep the remaining pours steady, avoiding vigorous stirring. Note the drawdown and taste after the cup cools slightly. Apple and cocoa are most useful as comparison points: does the fruit feel crisp and balanced, or is the brew sharply sour? Does the cocoa finish feel rounded, or has it become dry? These observations guide the next grind adjustment.

A fast, thin brew may benefit from a finer grind. A slow, drying brew may improve with a coarser setting or less agitation. Do not chase a universal three-minute result if the coffee already tastes balanced. Filter shape, paper resistance, dose and grind distribution all affect drainage.

For automatic drip, scale to 30 grams of coffee and 480 grams of water. Use the brewer’s normal full brewing cycle and check that the bed is evenly saturated. If you prefer more strength after achieving balanced extraction, increase the dose slightly; changing strength is different from correcting sourness or astringency.

Grind, format and freshness

Choose 12 ounces for home exploration or five pounds for higher consumption. Whole bean offers control over grind at brewing time. Medium ground is a practical starting option for many drip brewers, coarse suits French press, and fine is intended for methods needing smaller particles. Pre-ground fine coffee cannot be guaranteed to dial in every espresso machine.

For press brewing, start with 30 grams to 500 grams of water, steep four minutes, then decant completely. The metal filter retains more oils and suspended particles than paper, so body will feel different even with the same beans.

Pair the whole-bean option with the Turin DF54 grinder if you want to refine small grind changes. For another Boonton coffee with fruit and a sweet base, compare Guatemala Huehuetenango’s cherry and caramel profile.

Keep beans sealed away from heat and damp air, and grind only the dose you need. Let any supplied roast date and roaster guidance inform degassing time. Coffee prepared consistently is easier to evaluate as the bag ages than coffee brewed with changing scoops and water volumes.

Frequently asked questions

Does this contain apple or cocoa flavoring?

The supplier presents apple and cocoa as tasting notes, not added ingredients. It is not listed as a flavored coffee.

What is the roast level?

A roast level is not provided. Fine, medium and coarse in the selector refer to grind size.

Which grind should I choose for drip?

Medium is a useful starting point for many drip brewers. Whole bean provides additional adjustment if you own a grinder.

Can I use French press?

Yes. Choose coarse or grind whole beans medium-coarse, and decant after brewing to keep sediment out of the serving cup.

Is five pounds right for home use?

Only if your consumption justifies it. A smaller bag makes it easier to use the coffee while aromatic and fresh.

Are cultivar and altitude known?

Neither is specified for this listing. They have not been borrowed from another coffee with a similar regional name.
