About Onyx Eclipse Dark Roast Coffee

Eclipse is Onyx Coffee Lab’s most developed roast, created as an interpretation of traditional European-style coffee. Unlike the lighter profiles associated with many modern specialty coffees, Eclipse intentionally emphasizes roast development. Its origin changes with seasonality, so the current listing does not name a country, farm, cultivar or processing method.

“Most developed” is the accurate roast description supplied by Onyx; the previous light-roast SEO label was incorrect. Expect greater solubility and a more roast-forward balance than a light coffee. Brew temperature, grind and beverage yield should be managed to preserve body without pushing extraction into an ashy or drying finish.

Brewing Guidance

For espresso, start with an 18 g dose and a 36–40 g beverage yield. Because developed coffee is relatively soluble, consider a slightly lower brew temperature than for light roasts. If the shot is bitter or drying, grind coarser or shorten the yield; if it is weak or sour, grind finer.

Filter and immersion

For filter, begin around a 1:16 brew ratio with a medium grind and moderate water temperature. Avoid excessive drawdown. Allow coffee to degas after roasting, then keep the recipe stable while adjusting one extraction variable at a time.

Freshness, Format and Equipment

Dial in with the Turin DF54 single-dose grinder and control shot yield on the Turin MC3 espresso machine. Compare Eclipse with other roast styles in the specialty coffee collection.

Great Service! It has been a few months since I purchased my machine, but I absolutely love it. Initially I had some issues with damage from shipping, but Joe took care of it immediately so there were no problems. He also stayed on the phone with me for a long time the day I received my machine so I could get everything working properly. I highly recommend!
