The Nuova Simonelli Appia Life Semi-Automatic gives the barista direct start-and-stop control over every extraction. It is a straightforward commercial machine for operators who value hands-on shot timing, dependable steam performance, raised groups, and the forgiving Soft Infusion System without paying for programmed volumetric dosing.
Manual extraction control for professional baristas
On a semi-automatic machine, the barista starts and stops the brew cycle. That makes this version well suited to trained teams that adjust recipes by coffee, dose, yield, and service conditions. SIS gently manages the opening phase of extraction, while cool-touch steam wands, raised group heads, a hot-water outlet, and an efficient work area support day-to-day cafe and restaurant use.
Available group sizes
| Configuration | Dimensions | Boiler | Electrical | SKU |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 Group | 16 in. W x 22 in. D x 21 in. H | 5 L | 110-125V, 1500W, 13A, NEMA 5-15 | MAPPI19SEM01ND0001 |
| 2 Group | 31 in. W x 22 in. D x 21 in. H | 11 L | 208-240V, 3400W, 17A, NEMA 6-20 | MAPPI19SEM02ND0001 |
The 1 Group is the space-conscious choice for lower-volume commercial service. The 2 Group supports overlapping drink preparation and multiple baristas. Both are factory raised-group models; the previous “lowered” labeling has been removed because it did not match the current U.S. configuration.
Installation requirements
The electrical receptacle must be within three feet of the machine. Provide a dedicated 3/8-inch cold-water line with shutoff valve and compression fitting, 2-4 bar line pressure, and at least 1 GPM flow. The open gravity drain must be at least 1.25 inches inside diameter and within four feet. The installation drawings call for a 2.5-inch counter utility hole.
Water specifications
Use properly sized filtration. Nuova Simonelli specifies hardness no higher than 3 gpg/50 ppm, filtration below 1 micron, TDS of 50-250 ppm, alkalinity of 10-150 ppm, chlorine below 0.50 ppm, and pH of 6.5-8.5. Water outside the approved range can cause scale, corrosion, flavor problems, and warranty issues.
Included equipment
According to the user manuals, the package includes the espresso machine, tamper, single basket, double baskets and blind baskets based on group count, springs, portafilters, double and single spouts, a 3/8-inch inlet hose, and a 25 mm drain hose. A qualified technician should make the final installation and verify all electrical, plumbing, drainage, and backflow requirements.
Semi-Automatic versus Volumetric
Choose Semi-Automatic when the barista should control extraction time for every shot. Choose Volumetric when programmed portions and multitasking are more important. AutoSteam is not offered on this Semi-Automatic page; it is available on compatible volumetric Appia Life configurations.
Colors and commercial packages
Black is standard. Red or pearl-white side panels can be specified through the factory program. Contact Espresso Outlet to plan the complete station, including grinder capacity, water treatment, knock box, electrical service, and installation.

Frequently asked questions
Does semi-automatic mean the machine is easier than volumetric?
It is mechanically straightforward, but it asks more of the barista because each shot must be stopped manually. Volumetric dosing generally makes consistency and multitasking easier.
Can I use the 2 Group on 110V?
No. The current U.S. 2 Group Semi-Automatic is a 208-240V machine using the specified NEMA 6-20 receptacle.
Which Appia Life is best for a narrow counter?
The 16-inch-wide 1 Group is narrowest. If you need two groups in limited space, compare the Appia Life Compact. For automatic shot volumes, see the 1 Group Volumetric or 2 Group Volumetric. Browse all commercial espresso machines.
