Water Test Strips for Espresso Machines: Hardness, Alkalinity, Chlorine, and How to Read Them
Water test strips are quick colorimetric tests used to estimate one or more water parameters such as hardness, alkalinity, chlorine, pH, or other chemistry relevant to coffee equipment. They are convenient for screening and routine checks, but their precision depends on the strip design and how carefully the test is performed.
What a strip may test
Some strips measure only total hardness. Multi-parameter strips may include separate pads for hardness, alkalinity, pH, free chlorine, or other values. Read the package carefully because the color chart and timing are specific to that product.
How to get a useful reading
- Use fresh water from the point you actually want to evaluate.
- Follow the manufacturer's dip or immersion time exactly.
- Remove excess water as instructed rather than wiping the reagent pads.
- Wait the specified development time.
- Compare the color under neutral lighting before the result continues changing.
Common sources of error
Old or improperly stored strips, wet fingers, incorrect timing, unusual water color, and subjective color matching can all affect results. Very narrow target ranges can be difficult to judge from broad color blocks.
Strip vs. drop test
For a quick confirmation that softened water has not broken through, a hardness strip can be very useful. When precise hardness or alkalinity matters for treatment sizing and recipe development, titration-style drop tests generally provide better resolution. A full laboratory analysis may be appropriate for unusual well water, high silica, chloride concerns, or persistent equipment problems.
Test both source and treated water
Comparing inlet water with water after filtration or softening helps show whether the treatment system is actually changing the intended parameter.
