Legato V2 vs Barista Express Impress

Updated September 9, 2026.

The Turin Legato V2 is a separate espresso machine for a modular setup. The Breville Barista Express Impress BES876 combines a grinder with assisted dosing and tamping. Both have PID-controlled brewing and manual steam wands. The Impress name does not mean automatic milk texturing.

What the Impress system does

Breville’s Barista Express Impress page describes intelligent dosing and assisted tamping. The system reduces some repeated work in preparing the basket, but you still choose grind, manage the portafilter and texture milk. It is not the same as the Barista Touch Impress or an Oracle. Refer to the BES876 manual for the actual controls.

What the Legato setup gives you

The Legato V2 offers a 58mm portafilter, adjustable brew settings, programmable pre-infusion and an adjustable OPV. A separate grinder can be selected for your preferred burrs and dosing routine and later changed independently of the machine. That flexibility appeals to someone who enjoys learning espresso preparation.

Compare complete prices

Add the Legato, an espresso-capable grinder, a scale and any necessary preparation tools before comparing the total with the Impress package. The DF54 is one possible single-dose pairing, but current prices and availability should drive the calculation. Do not assume an old machine-price difference automatically pays for a grinder or that a separate setup guarantees superior espresso.

Ease of use and learning

The Impress is attractive when assistance with dosing and tamping is the feature you will use each morning. The Legato encourages direct control of dose, distribution and tamping. Both need a suitable grind and recipe, and both require manual milk technique. If hands-free milk is your priority, our Bambino Plus comparison covers a more relevant Breville alternative.

Space and long-term ownership

An integrated appliance groups controls and grinding in one body; a separate machine and grinder offer more placement options but need two working areas. Measure the complete station and leave room for tank access and a milk jug. Maintain the grinder as well as the brewing and steaming systems. Ask who handles repairs and what the applicable warranty covers.

Choose the Legato when modularity and hands-on brewing are central to your plans. Choose the Express Impress when its integrated grinder and assisted puck preparation simplify the routine you want. Neither choice removes the value of fresh coffee, a scale and careful cleaning.
