Turin DF54 vs Lelit Fred PL044MMT: Guide
Updated September 9, 2026.
The Turin DF54 and Lelit Fred PL044MMT both provide stepless adjustment for espresso. The DF54 suits weighed single doses with a flat-burr platform; the Fred suits hopper-fed conical grinding with a timer. Choose the routine you prefer before treating the burr diameter as a quality ranking.

| Adjustment | Stepless collar | Stepless micrometric knob |

The DF54’s single-dose appeal
The current DF54 v4.1 includes a revised metal declumper and larger exit chute. Older units share the basic 54mm format but may have different parts. It is useful when you change beans, brew decaf occasionally or want to weigh the coffee before grinding. The collar also makes broad changes between espresso and filter easy to access.
The Fred’s espresso routine
Lelit’s Fred PL044MMT specification lists 38mm conical burrs and a timed dose setting. Its knob is useful for small espresso corrections, while hopper feeding reduces the need to measure beans for every drink. The timer controls grinding duration, not brew temperature: this grinder should not be described as having an espresso-machine PID.
How to judge the cup
Dial each grinder using the same coffee, dose and intended beverage style, allowing the grind setting to differ. Taste after cooling. A flat burr is not automatically more uniform or more flavorful than every conical design. Burr condition, geometry and preparation matter more than a simplistic larger-is-better claim.
What changes in daily use
The DF54 requires a scale, cup transfer and a clearing routine. The Fred lets you repeat a timed dose, but coffee weight should be checked after changes to beans or grind. If you frequently switch between espresso and French press, think about how you will record and return to settings. If everyone drinks the same espresso blend, the hopper may be the easier choice.
Care and buying checks
Keep both grounds paths clean, unplug before access and follow the correct reassembly instructions. Check that the electrical version matches your supply. Compare current prices with the same accessories included and confirm warranty handling. Used DF54 listings should identify the revision; used Fred listings should show the PL044MMT model code.
Choose the DF54 for a compact flat-burr single-dose routine. Choose the Fred when timed hopper espresso is more convenient. For a conical single-dose alternative to the Fred, see SK40 versus Lelit Fred.
