Turin Axis Bottomless Portafilter Spraying: Fix the Puck First
Spraying from the Axis bottomless portafilter usually means water found a weak path through the coffee puck. The open basket reveals the problem; it does not cause it.
Read the pattern
- Fast pale stream: grind may be too coarse or dose too low.
- Side spray after pressure rises: distribution, tamp, edge sealing, or excessive early force is likely.
- Beading on only one side: the puck may be uneven or the machine may not be level.
- No flow at high gauge pressure: move coarser or reduce the dose.
Reset the recipe
- Clean and dry the 58mm basket.
- Use a dose appropriate for the installed 18g or 22g basket.
- Break up clumps and distribute grounds to the edges.
- Tamp once, level and straight.
- Check that the puck screen does not eliminate needed headspace.
- Pre-infuse with low lever force and wait for even saturation before building pressure.
Change grind size before changing PID temperature. Temperature rarely fixes a dramatic flow or spraying problem.
If water leaks around the outside of the portafilter rather than through the basket holes, inspect the basket rim, locking position, and group seal. Allow the group to cool before cleaning, and contact support if a new seal will not hold.
