How to Size a Generator for a Mobile Coffee Business

A generator can have an impressive number on its label and still be the wrong power source for your coffee business. The espresso machine may need a voltage it does not provide. The water heater may push the running load too high. Or the approved outdoor position may be too far from the cart for the proposed electrical arrangement.

Start with the complete cart or trailer, then choose a generator and distribution system that can support it. Treat wattage, compatibility, operating conditions, and placement as parts of the same decision.

Make a list of actual equipment inputs

Collect the exact electrical specifications for the espresso machine, grinders, refrigeration, pumps, water heaters, lighting, POS, and any additional beverage equipment. Include voltage, phase, frequency, input ratings, and manufacturer connection requirements.

Use model data wherever available. A generator calculator's “coffee maker” example is unlikely to describe a commercial espresso machine and its supporting equipment. Ask manufacturers for missing starting or supply information. The electrical professional assessing the system needs more than a sum of approximate watts, particularly where motors, controls, and multiple supply voltages are involved.

Calculate a running-load scenario

The following is a hypothetical cart, using invented electrical inputs to show the method. It is not a recommended equipment package or a specification for a generator purchase.

This example assumes those loads can operate together at the stated inputs. Real equipment cycles and starts differently, so describe opening, service, and cleaning conditions separately. Include any omitted appliances before treating the schedule as complete.

The water heater is easy to overlook because customers never see it. Its demand still matters when it recovers during service. The same applies to refrigeration, which can start automatically while the espresso machine is heating.

Add starting demand without counting it twice

Suppose the hypothetical refrigerator above requires 1,200W during startup rather than its 300W running input. Its additional startup demand is 900W. If that start overlaps all the other example loads, the scenario reaches 6,100W: the 5,200W running total plus the additional 900W.

Those numbers are invented for the example. Actual starting demand, duration, power factor, and generator response need equipment data and professional assessment. Other loads may also start or change at the same time.

Do not automatically add the full 1,200W to a total that already includes the refrigerator's 300W. Conversely, do not ignore starting demand because the running total looks comfortably below a generator's headline number.

A single generic percentage added to the total cannot establish compatibility for every cart. Have the generator supplier and electrical professional review the operating scenarios and the margin needed for the actual equipment and conditions.

Read rated output and maximum output separately

Honda's EU7000iS is a useful manufacturer example: its published specification lists 7,000W maximum output and 5,500W rated output at its specified supply arrangement. The larger number is not a promise of 7,000W available continuously. Honda EU7000iS specifications

A 5,200W running scenario would leave only 300W below that example's rated output. That arithmetic alone is not enough to approve it for the hypothetical cart, even if a listed maximum appears to cover the startup example. Distribution limits, startup duration, actual loads, operating conditions, and manufacturer requirements remain unresolved.

Use this example to read specifications correctly, not as a recommendation that this generator will run your coffee business. Compare the exact generator configuration with the completed load and installation assessment.

Match voltage and the distribution system

A generator's total watts do not tell you what is available through each receptacle. Individual outlets and the generator's supply arrangement have limits. A suitable 120/240V system also needs its loads distributed appropriately; the professional reviewing the installation must account for the actual connection and load balance.

Confirm the machine's voltage, phase, and frequency requirements first. Then confirm the generator's output and approved distribution arrangement. A plug adapter does not resolve an incompatible supply or increase an outlet's capacity.

Have qualified personnel address grounding, bonding, protective devices, cord or feeder specifications, and the connection to the mobile unit. These depend on the equipment and installation; they are not settings to guess at during an event.

Also ask both equipment suppliers about power-quality requirements. The word “inverter” on a generator is useful product information, but it does not replace confirmation that the complete supply is suitable for the connected coffee equipment.

Plan runtime around your load

Runtime claims come with conditions. Honda lists different tank runtimes for the EU7000iS at rated load and at one-quarter load. That difference is a reminder to use the relevant operating condition when planning an event, rather than borrowing the longest advertised runtime. Honda model specifications

Account for warmup, service, and any powered work before or after the guest-facing window. Follow the generator manufacturer's fuel, maintenance, shutdown, cooling, and refueling instructions, along with the site's fire requirements. Plan any necessary interruption so it does not leave staff improvising while customers wait.

Temperature, elevation, and other site conditions can affect equipment ratings or operation. Ask the supplier what adjustments apply to the model and location. Keep noise limits, fuel-storage arrangements, transport weight, and service access in the purchase comparison too.

Confirm an acceptable outdoor location before booking

Portable combustion generators must be operated outdoors, away from places where exhaust can enter occupied spaces. CPSC advises placing them at least 20 feet from buildings, with exhaust directed away from openings, and never operating them in enclosed areas even with doors or windows open. For a coffee event, that means an open trailer door does not make it acceptable to run a portable generator inside the trailer. A covered compartment under a cart is not automatically a suitable location either. Purpose-built installed generator systems require their own manufacturer-approved installation and professional review.

Agree on placement with the venue and relevant fire or event authority, including customer areas, exhaust, weather arrangements, and the approved electrical route. A CO shutoff feature does not remove the need for safe placement. If the site cannot accommodate the approved setup, arrange another suitable power source or change the booking plan.

Rehearse before the first paid service

After the system is installed and checked, run a supervised rehearsal under representative demand. Include cold startup, repeated drinks, refrigerator cycling, and water-heater recovery. Have qualified personnel investigate voltage, tripping, or equipment-performance concerns.

Keep the tested equipment list and operating procedure with the unit. Adding a blender or a larger heater later changes the system the original assessment covered.
