Mechanical Pre-Infusion in Espresso
Mechanical pre-infusion is an espresso wetting phase created by the machine’s hydraulic or mechanical design rather than by a fully electronic pressure or flow program. Springs, chambers, restrictors, valves, pistons, and group geometry can all create a lower-intensity opening phase before full extraction.
Classic examples
E61-style groups use a pre-infusion chamber and mechanical valve sequence that can soften the initial arrival of water. Spring-lever groups fill a chamber before the spring-driven piston produces its main pressure profile. Other machines use restrictors or passive hydraulic volumes to slow pressure rise.
Mechanical does not mean identical
Two machines described as having mechanical pre-infusion may behave very differently. Incoming line pressure, pump type, gigleur size, group volume, spring rate, puck resistance, and lever or valve timing all affect the actual flow and pressure reaching the coffee.
Why it can help
A gentler initial wetting phase gives the puck time to absorb water and swell before full-flow extraction. That can make the transition into higher pressure less abrupt, although good distribution and tamping remain essential.
Mechanical vs. programmed pre-infusion
Electronic systems can deliberately control pump speed, pressure, flow, pauses, and timing. Mechanical systems are usually less adjustable but can be highly repeatable because their behavior is built into the hydraulic architecture.
