Fellow Coffee Grinders: Opus 2, Ode Gen 2 and Alternatives

Fellow’s grinder line is small, but the two current models are built for different jobs. The Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2 is a 64 mm flat-burr grinder dedicated to brewed coffee. The newer Opus 2 is a 48 mm conical-burr all-rounder designed to reach espresso while also covering pour-over, drip, AeroPress, French press and cold brew.

Fellow history: design-led coffee equipment

Jake Miller founded Fellow in 2013 while attending business school. The first product, the Duo Coffee Steeper, launched through Kickstarter. Fellow subsequently built its identity around countertop coffee equipment that combined specialty-coffee function with a restrained industrial-design language.

The Stagg kettle family made the company widely recognizable, but Fellow’s first grinder required a different level of engineering. Ode launched on Kickstarter in December 2019. The campaign met its US$200,000 target in 94 minutes and passed US$1 million, demonstrating demand for a compact grinder designed specifically for home filter brewing.

Production Ode units arrived in 2020. The first-generation grinder established the basic architecture: 64 mm flat burrs, a wide front dial, single-dose hopper, magnetic catch cup, automatic stop and a knocker intended to clear grounds from the chute. Early owners, however, frequently wanted a finer brew range and better static control.

Fellow responded first through burr revisions and then through Ode Gen 2. Released in 2022, Gen 2 combined redesigned in-house brew burrs, increased hopper capacity, an ionizer-based anti-static system and workflow refinements. Fellow also offered SSP Multipurpose burrs for users who prioritized extreme clarity.

The original Opus arrived in 2023 as a lower-priced conical grinder able to reach espresso. In 2026 Fellow replaced that adjustment concept with Opus 2, using 48 mm conical burrs, a stepless side dial, integrated ionizer, new catch cups and simpler burr access. As of September 2026, Fellow’s active grinder choice is therefore straightforward: Ode Gen 2 for filter, Opus 2 when espresso is required.

Fellow Opus 2 in detail

Opus 2 is the current espresso-capable Fellow grinder. It uses 48 mm conical burrs and a smooth stepless side adjustment rather than the original Opus’s combination of an external dial and hidden inner ring. That change directly addresses one of the first model’s most confusing ownership issues: a setting could not be understood from the outer number alone unless the inner ring position was also known.

Fellow specifies a 100 g single-dose load bin, 100 g standard catch cup, 30 g espresso cup, automatic shutoff, tool-free burr access, 300 W power and dimensions of 206 × 130 × 267 mm. Weight is 2.3 kg. The espresso cup is designed for transfer to both 54 mm and 58 mm portafilters.

An integrated ionizer reduces static at the chute. “Near-zero retention” remains a design description rather than a guarantee that every bean, roast and environment produces exactly zero exchange. Dark, oily coffee, humidity and grinder cleanliness still change behavior.

Opus 2 is best for someone who wants one visually simple grinder for several methods, including espresso, without choosing a large flat-burr platform. Its compromise is that one conical set must serve a very wide range. Buyers specializing in high-clarity filter or seeking a large espresso burr ecosystem may prefer a dedicated machine.

How to dial espresso on Opus 2

1. Use Fellow’s brew-range guidance as a starting point, not a guaranteed recipe.
2. Keep dose, basket, distribution and tamp consistent.
3. Move the stepless dial finer if the shot runs too fast and coarser if it chokes.
4. Make small changes; stepless control allows intermediate positions.
5. Judge taste after flow is close. Adjust yield and temperature rather than forcing every correction through grind size.

Fellow Ode Gen 2 in detail

Ode Gen 2 is deliberately not an espresso grinder. Fellow specifies 64 mm stainless-steel flat burrs, 11 numbered settings with 31 total steps, 100 g capacity, 239 × 105 × 248.3 mm dimensions, 4.6 kg weight and a 120 V, 140 W electrical specification for the US version.

The stock Gen 2 burrs use a two-stage geometry. Fellow positions them toward balanced sweetness, body and medium clarity while grinding materially finer than the earliest Ode burrs. The adjustment range begins around the territory useful for AeroPress and pour-over rather than espresso.

Workflow is the product’s strongest point. Beans enter a shallow single-dose hopper; automatic stop ends the cycle; the ionizer reduces charged particles; the magnetic cup locates under the chute; and a spring-loaded knocker helps clear remaining grounds. These features reduce mess but do not eliminate the need to brush the chute or clean the burr chamber.

Stock Gen 2 burrs versus SSP MP

The more expensive SSP option is not automatically preferable. Some coffees become thinner or less forgiving when flavor separation is maximized. Stock Gen 2 burrs are often the stronger all-around choice for mixed roast levels.

Original Opus versus Opus 2

The first Opus used 40 mm conical burrs and 41-plus settings created through an outer numbered ring and an inner adjustment ring. That system offered additional resolution, but it made returning to saved recipes awkward because two controls jointly determined the burr position.

Opus 2 increases the burr diameter to 48 mm, places stepless control on the side, adds a stronger anti-static approach, supplies two magnetic catch cups and provides tool-free burr access. It is a genuine second generation, not a color refresh. Owners of the original Opus should use their own manual because setting instructions do not transfer directly.

Ode Gen 1 versus Gen 2

Original Ode established the physical concept but shipped with brew burrs that many users found too coarse at the fine end for small, high-extraction pour-overs. Fellow introduced interim burr revisions before the complete Gen 2 grinder.

Gen 2’s major changes include the purpose-designed Gen 2 burr, ionizer, larger 100 g hopper and a redesigned catch-cup area. A Gen 1 chassis can accept compatible 64 mm burr upgrades, but installing new burrs does not add Gen 2’s anti-static hardware or every physical refinement.

Ode versus DF64 Gen 2

The shared 64 mm diameter can be misleading. Ode is stepped, filter-only and designed around Fellow’s tidy automatic-stop workflow. DF64 Gen 2 is stepless, espresso-capable, bellows-equipped and widely used with aftermarket burrs. Choose Ode if brewed-coffee focus and countertop experience lead; choose DF64 when espresso or burr experimentation is important.

Opus 2 versus DF54

Opus 2 offers a broad brew range and conical presentation. DF54 is a 54 mm flat-burr single-dose grinder that targets espresso more directly while still reaching filter settings. The decision is not simply 48 versus 54 mm: conical versus flat geometry, dial design and preferred cup style are more important.

Cleaning, static and calibration

• Unplug the grinder before opening the burr chamber.
• Use the correct manual for Opus, Opus 2, Ode Gen 1 or Ode Gen 2.
• Brush burrs and internal surfaces dry; never pour water into the grinder.
• Clean the chute and anti-static area carefully without bending or damaging components.
• After burr removal, follow Fellow’s calibration instructions before brewing.
• Do not use rice as a cleaning agent unless the manufacturer explicitly approves the exact product.

Ode’s ionizer works at the chute. Oils and coffee dust can coat that area and reduce performance. More mess after a period of use may indicate that the anti-static components need careful cleaning rather than that the grinder has permanently failed.

What Fellow grinders are currently sold?

Fellow’s current core grinders are Opus 2 and Ode Brew Grinder Gen 2. The original Opus and Ode Gen 1 are legacy models.

Can Ode Gen 2 grind espresso?

No. Fellow explicitly designs Ode for brewed coffee. Even if a burr touches an unusually fine range, the adjustment and motor system are not intended for espresso.

Can Opus 2 grind espresso?

Yes. Its 48 mm conical burrs and stepless dial cover espresso through cold brew.

Is Opus 2 the same as the original Opus?

No. It changes the burr size, adjustment system, anti-static design, catch cups and service access.

Should I buy SSP burrs?

Is Opus 2 stepless?

What does automatic stop measure?

It detects the end of grinding; it does not weigh coffee. You should weigh the input dose separately.

Does Fellow have zero retention?

Both current grinders are designed to limit retained grounds, but no home grinder guarantees literal zero exchange in every condition.

How large is the Opus 2 hopper?

Fellow specifies a 100 g single-dose load bin. That capacity supports batch brewing, although most espresso doses are far smaller.

Fellow has made the buying decision cleaner in 2026. Opus 2 is the versatile choice and the only current Fellow intended for espresso. Ode Gen 2 is the more specialized filter grinder, with stock burrs for balanced sweetness or SSP MP for maximum clarity.
