Coffee Shop Electrical Requirements for Espresso Machines and Grinders

Electrical planning becomes expensive when the espresso machine arrives before anyone has checked the building. A socket near the counter does not establish that the supply is suitable, and an empty position in a panel does not establish available capacity.
Your job as the owner is to give the electrician a complete equipment list and a realistic service plan. The electrician can then determine what the site needs, price the work, and coordinate the applicable permits and inspections.
Gather the exact equipment information
For each appliance, record the model, voltage, phase, frequency, rated input, connection type, and manufacturer's circuit or service requirements. Include a current specification sheet and installation guide. For used equipment, provide a clear photograph of the actual nameplate as well.
Model families can contain different electrical versions. A specification copied from an overseas website or a different group count may not apply to the unit you are ordering. Ask the supplier to confirm the market version and any factory-selected power configuration.
For example, Simonelli USA's Appia Life Compact 2 Group 220V sheet lists 208–240V, 3,000W, a 14A draw, and a NEMA 6-20 receptacle. Those details belong together as the manufacturer's specification for that version. Do not replace them with a guessed circuit size based on one number.
Include the equipment around the espresso machine
The espresso machine is only part of the bar's electrical demand. Include the main grinder, decaf grinder, brewer, hot-water dispenser, refrigeration, ice machine, blender, dishwasher, water-treatment equipment, and any separate water pump or heater.
Give the electrician the wider premises information too: lighting, heating and cooling, kitchen appliances, and other tenants' arrangements where relevant. The complete building assessment is different from adding up the coffee equipment in your shopping cart.

Keep this schedule current when equipment changes. Replacing a planned appliance with a larger model after the rough-in can affect the electrical scope even if the new unit fits the same counter space.
Understand watts, amps, and the service requirement
Watts describe power. Amps describe current. Voltage, phase, and the appliance's electrical characteristics affect the relationship between them. The manufacturer's required service or circuit rating is a separate item to collect.
A simple watts-divided-by-volts calculation can be a rough educational illustration for a suitable load. It is not a complete commercial circuit design method. It does not establish conductor size, protective devices, allowable loading, connection details, or the capacity of the building supply.
La Marzocco's Strada S/X guide, for example, lists a 30A required service for its two-group version and 50A for its three-group version. Use the exact model's requirement and the electrician's design rather than assuming another espresso machine will need the same arrangement.
Have the site checked before finalizing the layout
Ask the electrician to verify the available supply and assess the panel, existing circuits, proposed routes, equipment connections, and any required upgrade. In leased premises, clarify access and the landlord's responsibility for work affecting the building.
Then place outlets and other connections using the manufacturer's requirements and the finished equipment layout. Consider the reach of supplied cords, access for servicing, water exposure, and whether staff can clean the area without pulling on cables.
A plan based only on the front view of the bar can miss the problem. Draw the undercounter space with refrigeration, treatment cartridges, plumbing, cabinet doors, and electrical connections shown together.
Make the quote describe a finished result
Ask what the electrical quote includes: supply assessment, new circuits, connection points, any disconnecting means required for the installation, permits, inspections, labeling, and the final equipment connection where applicable.
Clarify who supplies any manufacturer-specified cord or connection components and who confirms the finished installation before commissioning. The equipment installer and electrician may be different businesses; neither should have to guess where the other's scope ends.
Have unresolved site issues settled before booking delivery and installation. A rescheduled technician visit can delay opening even when the electrical work itself is straightforward.
Plan simultaneous use without inventing a demand factor
Describe an ordinary opening and a busy service period. The machine may be warming while refrigeration cycles and a brewer heats. During the rush, several appliances may call for power at once.
Those operating details help the electrician evaluate the installation. They do not give the owner a basis to declare that only a fixed percentage of the nameplate total will ever be needed.
Ask for a design that supports the agreed operation and any documented equipment modes. If the proposed solution depends on staff never using two normal appliances together, understand that limitation before accepting it.
Give coffee carts a written venue-power requirement
For a mobile business, “power provided” is too vague for a booking agreement. Ask the venue to confirm the supply, connection type, circuit availability, location, and who is responsible for providing the approved distribution arrangement.
Have the cart's electrical professional specify what the operation needs and how it should connect. Discuss weather exposure, cable routing, protective devices, and the venue's own rules. A photograph of an outlet can help identify a question, but it does not verify the supply behind it.
If using a generator or battery system, obtain a complete compatibility and capacity assessment. Continuous output, startup demands, runtime, power quality, and the actual equipment configuration all matter. The largest wattage printed on a product advertisement is not a complete event-power plan.
Don't make extension cords the permanent installation
Place the required connections where the equipment belongs. The Naval Postgraduate School's electrical safety guidance warns against using extension cords as substitutes for permanent wiring and against interconnecting cords.
If a supplied cord will not reach, have the electrician and equipment supplier resolve the layout or connection. Do not improvise adapters, remove grounding provisions, or increase a breaker rating to stop nuisance trips. Repeated trips need investigation of the appliance and supply.
Finish with a practical handover
After the required electrical checks and equipment commissioning, have the team shown the normal operating controls and the appropriate shutdown procedure. Keep the circuit identification, equipment documents, and service contacts accessible.
Train staff to report damaged cords, loose or unusually hot connections, burning smells, or repeated trips and to take affected equipment out of service for assessment. A routine that depends on resetting the same fault each morning needs attention.
